My 95 YJ has a slight chatter feeling when I let out the clutch when cold. After the motor warms up it goes away.  However, when I bought the jeep the Master Cylinder reservoir was low so I filled it up.  It has not gone down since then but when I depress the clutch after it has warmed up a bit I feel something through the peddle when it touches the floor - almost like a seal or something being squished.  The clutch never grabs you but it does not seem to be slipping when under power.  I have no problems shifting other than the normal 1st to 2nd stiffness when cold.  Are the two related?  Would replacing the master\slave cylinder be advised or am I looking at a complete clutch/cylinder replacement ($$$)?  thanks.

Have you ever flushed the system?  How long has it been this way?  The hard 2nd shift is 100% normal and I doubt it's related.  The hard 2nd is an internal issue with the transmission.  The clutch system is completely separate.  If I was to make a guess though I'd guess the issue would be with the master.  But that's just a guess and you'd really want to localize the issue if possible.

I thought that that master/slave system was sealed in a 95?  I don't see any type of bleed valve so how would you flush the system?

Are you sure?  There is usually a worm screw that covers the bleeder hole.  (On TJ's this hold is sealed though.  Unless you have a 95.5 and not a 95.  In which case it could have either.)  The bleeder is not a conventional zerk.

I checked the slave cylinder and while there was no fresh fluid in the area it was pretty nasty.  I just might replace the master/slave just to make sure.  In either case if I have to pull the trans and replace the clutch at least the hydraulics will be good.

Since you have an external setup it should be fairly painless to do.  You'll probably want the kit they sell that is ready to go.  Otherwise, you'll have to drill a hole in the slave to be able to fill the system.

Just so you know, I have the same issue, and I replaced the whole system (master, slave, and line), and the chatter/slipping when cold continues.  I also just got back from a long trip, and I did notice some fluid coming from that section, but I have not been able to locate what the cause is yet...

Be the way, my slave cylinder was pretty much dead, so I am not sorry I changed the system.
