(Was: Jeffy's Joop) Alternator Upgrades
« on: November 13, 2007, 10:56:51 AM »
I had thoughts about the alternator myself. But, I don't have a/c, I'm running the stock stereo and I only have the gps turned on when it's needed for trips. I should be good. I don't remember my exact alternator rating from my build sheet but I do know it was over 100 amps. I don't think I should have any problems.

The stock alternator is around 75A.  The optional HD package bumps that up to 90A.

I believe mine's the 90A and it can barely handle what I'm running now...would love one of those newer low torque alternators.

Well, I have it installed and I think I'm gonna have to order myself a 136amp alternator.  The Jeeps been sitting all weekend and the battery is just over the red.  I drove it around the block and it's below the red.     This fan is pulling a LOT of air.  More then the OEM fan that's for sure.  I see leafs blowing away behind the front tires.  It's an awesome fan.  I should have a write up soon.

OK, I did a quick and dirty writeup http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php?topic=3781.0.

The fan is pretty impressive.  It is loud.  You'll see leaves blow around.  I'll need to get a higher amp alternator before I can really tell how much of a difference it had made.  I do have to say that for a minimal investment, it is a good project.

Think the build sheets are correct? If they are we should have enough power to run the e-fans.

Well crap, looks like us YJ'ers get screwed.  I checked the Jeep Book and it indeed say's the 1997 - 2000 TJ has a 117a HD Alternator as an option but only as a Package. Stock is only 81A though. Still the stock battery is a 500 ampere with an option for a 600 ampere.

The option is listed as 23A and 23B for the 5-speed and 22A and 22B for the Auto.

I pulled this from my Joop thread since this is just focusing on Alternators now.

I checked around for writeups and you know what?  They suck.  They all assume you have something around 90a or less.  There is no mention of a 117a.  Actually the one I found that had parts numbers was way too generalized.  So I ended up digging through some old Mopar numbers and put them on the site.  It's under the Alternator upgrade.  There are a bunch of them.  I think the list is mostly accurate since many alternators cross reference to other engines.  There's even a 150A out there but it was discontinued.

I've seen some 136a alternators on ebay but no 117's or the 150a.

I'm thinking that I'll probably go no less then the 136a since the price difference between a 90-136 isn't much.  Better to have more then less here anyway.

Thanks Jeffy. I'm going to check the part # on my alternator just to make sure I have the 117a. Although your reference guide only goes up to 2000.  ???

My build sheet specifies the ADHP - Heavy Duty Electrical Upgrade.

BAUP - 117 amp alternator with a BCEP - 600 amp battery.

Mine still squeals at start-up now (it's darker, so my lights, stereo, etc. are all on at the same time) and under strain when using the winch....not sure I'll change it until I'm sure I'll have the engine for a while.

Well, you can assume they carried over from 2000.

That's wishful thinking.  The alternators for anything pre-90's is usually pretty weak.  You'll probably want to get the Model # off the alternator and do some searching.

BTW: thanks Dex and Mos, if it wasn't for your complaining, I would have been bored and not got anything productive done today. :twofingers:
