where to get the pto drives that go on the tranny? a buddy told me they aren't produced anymore, but I don't buy it. someone out there must know where to get pto drives in the aftermarket world. i'm specifically looking for one for my 80's sm465.

I have never heard of a PTO unit being produced in the after market for TJ's or YJ's. Wranglers aren't used very often as a utility/work vehicle that often anymore for there to be a demand for such a thing. I could be wrong but I don't think they exist.

Depends - what kind of tranny do you have.   If you have one with a standard 6 bolt spicer pto port then they are easy to find.  Most light duty transmissions do not have provision for a pto.  But transmissions like NV5400 T18 do.

Oops, didn't notice you stated SM465.  That will ahve a port for a 6 bolt spicer pto.  Tow truck supply places are one place to find them.

i know my rating is "newbie" but i've been 4wheeling 7 years and building jeeps for 4. not trying to start anything...but at least read my intro and give me a little credit. i realize ax-5s, ax-15s, aw4s, ect. don't have pto ports on the side! i'm talking about a pto for an sm465.

I'm not sure if anyone makes new PTO drive units.  Most of the tow trucks I've seen use electric winches these days.

I believe Ramsey still makes PTO's though.  Their 8000lbs PTO was an awesome winch for it's time.  Hell, I wouldn't mind running one today.  So Ramsey's website might be worth checking into.  They were big on PTO's in the 70's and 80's.

Otherwise, go with ebay and maybe even POR.  You might get lucky.  I wish PTO's were more popular.  They're better then the hydraulic winches.  They do cost a lot more because of the necessary extra equipment.  Most PTO's drive off og the transmission.  Although a few drive off of the transfer case.  Those aren't as good since they eat up a lot of ground clearance.

Good luck!
