Another Alternator issue...
« on: December 15, 2007, 06:00:45 PM »
This alternator is making a high pitch whine while idling.  (used the screwdriver trick.  Seems to be coming from there or maybe the tensioner.)  It's been a few months but now the alternator seems to be only putting out 10v instead of 14.7v.  The battery is s stupid design and had had issues with corrosion on the connector making for a weak connection. This causes the alternator to think the battery needs more power and tries to charge it.

In any case, after the water pump was replaced the alternator started making noise.  If it was the battery the alternator should be making 14.7v (max) on the gauge not 10v.

So I'm thinking the alternator is bad or a part of it has gone bad.

What a PITA since I've already replaced one alternator this year now the other truck is having issues.

Anyone else think it's the alternator?

Find out how to fully energize the field so it shows maximum output if voltage is still low its the alternator. If it comes up its the regulator I take it you measured voltage at the battery as well as the alternator and the alternator has a good ground. The charge wire can develop a high voltage drop

Jeffy,

Is this your new alternator that you replaced the stock one with because of the fan?

Update:

Replated the alternator with a New Mfg. Autolite and all of the noise and power issues have gone.  It's fixed.   :doggy:
