Breathing (p.s. I think this forum is excellent)
« on: January 25, 2008, 10:12:30 PM »
Hi All,

Firstly just want to say this is the best Jeep forum I have been on. Firstly because everyone is friendly and helpful and not "4 bangers suck, get a I6".
I've lurked for a while and done plenty of research on this forum, but cant find anything similar. So, two things:

1. I have the 2.4l and as most of you know it has stupid upturned horn at the air box. I dont want to hack up my air box, so is it feasible to just remove the cover to expose the whole air filter? Is the filter set in there well enought that it wont fall out from daily driving? Its just a though, I want to improve the air flow a little without installing induction. I dont know if its me, or the just lack of power from the squirrels but I feel as though it just isn't getting enough air as it can through 1st and 2nd, it lags a little too much.

2. What do you think of getting a K&N for the stock air box? I'm not expecting a power increase, just better air flow and being able to wash it would be good. I'm not trying to be cheap coz paper air filters aren't expensive, I just want to make the most out of what I have. Re-gearing is far in the future. Also, I have read that the K&N's let it more fine dust particles than paper filters. What do you guys think?

I appreciate your help, it great to find other 4banger owners!!

A K&N drop is your best option if you want to keep the stock air box.

I'm using a drop in K&N and it works just fine. I don't think I'd take off the cover just to get a little more air flow. I don't know if it helps anything but I turned my air horn downward so that it sits just behind the headlight. There is a gap in that area that lets in fresh air and feeds right in front of the horn. Again, I don't know if it helps but it can't hurt. When I go out on the trails I just turn it back facing up.

Leave the horn on if you are going to keep the stock air box. JP magazine dyno'd it and showed no increase with the horn removed so just leave it, I think it was the same article as the time they dyno'd the AEM intake. Okay, I found it for yah!  http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/engine/154_0706_jeep_wrangler_tj_intake_dyno/index.html

I read that article a while back and found it pretty interesting. If anything the air horn would probably speed up the air velocity on it's way into the box. I've taken the horn off of other Jeeps I've owned but I now keep it on.
