Topic: Loose tie rod?

OK, guys, this is probably a dumb question, but I've never fiddled with the steering, and I want to make sure I dont have a problem that can turn into an accident in the long run...  While re-tightening all the suspension nuts and bolts (U-bolts, shackles, spring, track bar, etc.) i decided to also check the nuts on the steering stabilizer.  To my surprise, I noticed that I could move the tie rod (rotate it) about 45 degrees back and forth.  Now, I know that the ball stud should allow for some play, but I always have a hard time aligning the Jeep just right, and I imagine that possibly the ball stud seals are shot, but does this mean I got a major problem, or is this normal (or at least not something I should loose sleep over)?

Unless you can physically move the tie rod ball within the socket itself, then it needs replacement. This is highly hard to do with the tie rod installed and connected. If you use your steering wheel and have someone just rotate it back/forth quickly (like a shimmy action), then you can watch the tie rod itself. If there is a noticeable difference between the ball and the socket housing, then replace it. Count the number of threads on the bad tie rod and make the new tie rod the same.

You should be able to twist the steering linkage slightly by hand, but not easily.  If it twists too easily, you may need to grease the tierod ends, or replace them if it's too late.
