diff. noise or tires?
« on: April 05, 2008, 08:01:28 PM »
I have a howl and not sure if it tires or the diff. I did put 4.88 in it so it could be just a bad mesh job but I also have Yokohama MT's which I'm told are loud. I really don't remember if it was that loud before the gear swap or not.
If I drive around 30 mph and let of the gas it seem to get better but at around 60 it's the same on the gas or off. its kinda a resonating sound, not a big deal but I'm thinking of getting some Destination AT's and would rather tell my self the noise is just tires even if it's the diff. because knowing I have quiet tires and still having a howl would bug me worse!

would letting of the gas or pushing in the clutch a highway speeds reduce a howl in the diff?

if its to much backlash or play on the carrier bearing it will howl under load and it will go away if you let of the gas.
If its a damaged pinion bearing it will howl worse when you let of the gas

did my 4.88 and my car hummed LOUD.  We had the crush sleeve too tight.  was tighter than 8 IN LBS.  Too much pressure on the pinion bearing.  redo the setup
