Tranny.....?
« on: April 07, 2008, 05:03:54 PM »
Well on my way to work this morining I experienced something new. After pulling out of the local 7-11 I went to shift to 3rd and the clutch only weent half way in.  With the sudden stop of the pedal I instanlly thought that something was under the pedal. Coke bottles have been know to travel to the front from the back when boucing around, either which hooker.  I left off the clutch and push'd it again and everything was fine.  Shifed to 3rd and then to 4th.  At the next light I down shifted and turned. When I went from 2nd to 3rd again the clutch only went half way again.

As I rolled to stop, I sat there and tried to get the clutch in, but it was a no go.  After towing back, and waitng for the sun to come out.  I got to looking around and did not see any reason for this problem.  I did see that the fluid was low, and if I wiggled the pedal just a bit then it would go inall the way.  I filled the fluid up and worked the clutch alot and then it would go all the way in.  But now I dont have any pedal pressure to speak of, it goes to straight to the floor.  If I let out about an inch then we're full on.

Any ideas would be greatly helpfull.  There is only about 12k on this tranny .

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a slave cylinder leak? Did you replace it with the tranny? sounds really weird that it would only happen in third gear!

What year is this Jeep?  If it's a 87-93 then it uses an internal hydraulic throwout bearing/slave.  If it's 1994-2006 then it's an external slave.  Internals can be prone to leaking BUT you'll notice a drip from the inspection plate at the bellhousing.  At the bottom of the bellhousing there is a thin sheet metal that covers the lower half of the bell housing.  If you look on the underside it leaves a gap, that's the inspection slot.  You'll usually see brakefluid leaking from there.

I'm not so sure it's the slave anyway.  Typically, you'll start to notice the clutch going away.  It will require pumping the clutch as it gets worse.  If it hangs, I'm thinking it's either something with the master or the mechanical parts of the clutch.  Wiggling the pedal fixing it would lead me to believe the master is the problem since wiggling the pedal should not affect anything else.  The piston on the master floats on the end of the shaft.  You depress the clutch and the piston is pushed forward.  It returns on it's own.  If the piston seal is broken the pedal will swing freely.  When the master goes, it can go very suddenly.

Very well could be the problem Jeff.  It's a 92. I replaced everything when I put in the tranny.  I did notice that there is fluid puddiling and a slow drip form the inspection sheild.  Drove it to work today, bout 70 miles, the fluid level stayed the same.  I have just a bit more pedal than I did last night.

Sounds like i need to pull some things out this wknd and check it out.  Does this sound like the Slave Cly.?

If it's leaking then it's the slave.  The master usually leaks internally.

You might want to go ahead and swap the master while you're at it though.  The master is around $70.  It's not really that important but the masters sometimes go soon after.  Although mine send a few years after.  The master isn't that difficult to swap out since it involves no real disassembly other then disconnecting the pedal and a pin.  At least it should insure that it won't happen in the near future.  Mine left me without the use of the clutch while on a jeep trail.  I ended up having to drive back down and on the highways without the clutch.
