15 to 19 gallon tank conversion for $10
« on: May 08, 2008, 11:54:23 AM »
I seriously thinking of doing this filler tube modification this weekend.

http://www.gottrail.com/TJ/TJfueltankconversion.html

I understand the process as addressed in this link.  The author of the article forgot to mention what lenght the filler tubes should be left at the end.  In another site I viewed others leaving 3in and 2.5in on 4cyl YJ's.

Have any of you done this and if so what were your results?

Also, What are the negatives? bad fuel gauge readings, ect.......

Haven't read the FAQ here I take it?

On a YJ just pull the hose out and leave it out...

Negatives?  Your gas gauge will rear 'F' for around 100 miles.

I have a TJ, does this mean that all the steps are the same?

Im definitely going through the liscense plate route.

I did mime about a year and some months ago; I just pulled out the tube, so mine was free...  It is kind of hard to work in the small space available there (I hit my hands and forearms countless of times), but it is easy to do.  now my tank is 20+ gallons (I actually filled it once when it was WAAAAAY empty - did I mention I was driving Alligator Alley through the everglades when it happened?  Fortunately, the jeep never quit on me! - and I filled it up with 20.2 gals.

Look at the pictures at the bottom.

Just to clarify!
1. take of the liscense plate holder to gain access to the gas tank metal neck piece. as shown in the pix.
2. With needle nose pliers pull the hose w/out the ball out.
3. Once I pull it out a couple inches just yank the whole thing out and leave it out.

This will work on a TJ as it did on YJ's correct?

No.  You need to drop the tank and cut the small tube as close as you can.  I know that the one guy said you can cut the large tube also but I didn't and it works just fine.

This is correct, FOR THE TJ, YOU HAVE TO DROP THE TANK.  You need to reach into the tank and cut the tube like what is pictured.

This gives you a fairly good idea whats involved
http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php?topic=3286.msg25196#msg25196

Try to do this with a tank thats close to empty, your a big guy so weight is not the problem but spilling gas everywhere is no fun. Take your time disconnecting the fuel lines and the pump wiring

Thank you for clarifying.  I will take out the tank then proceed to leaving 1 or 2in of hose left.

Finally did it last night after work.

Took about 1 hour to take down the tank and put it back.  My gas tank had about two gallons left in the tank.  At the end I went to the local gas station and filled it up with an additional 17.8 gallons.

The easiest mod on the jeep.
