split, fold and tumble rear seat
« on: May 28, 2008, 03:19:11 PM »
does anyone have one.  are they worth the money.  I'm looking to replace all my seats in my 98 tj and this is at the top of my options for the rear seat.  As for the front ones the wife wants the mastercraft baja rs but will the risers on the passenger side still work?  Need to have access to the back seat.

Baja RS's are $$$.  The only consideration with the Mastercrafts is they might be taller at the knee bolster then you might like.  I know my Rubicon's are 1-2" taller there.  This became a issue since my steering wheel doesn't adjust and to get into the driverseat, I had to 'drop-in'.  I couldn't really get my thigh past the wheel.  I'm not sure if the Baja's are that much different though.

For a rear seat, I'd get the matching Mastercraft seat.  It's a better seat then the OEM's.  It won't 'fold and tumble' though.  Still any back seat is a bit tight for two adults for any extended period of time.   For small kids, they are prefect though.  Used OEM seats come up for sale once in a while BUT, you've got to make sure they come with brackets.  Otherwise, you won't be able to install them and no one makes the brackets.

Thats good to know about the bolster I dont have much clearance as is between me and the steering wheel. We were at the parts store and they had a set of the mastercrafts there so she got to sit in them and loved them.  I saw that smittybilt makes some that at least look similar.  90 percent of the time it is myself, my wife and my 8 year old daughter so we were thinking the split rear seat so that we could gain back some cargo space considering that this is not only a DD but our only car.  thanks for the link.  if only you could put the ranger bench seat in the tj, dang the luck.

My Jeep is my only vehicle but I don't have a full family.  I've never really had any issues with having three people without a bunch of stuff.  Is there going to be a time when you need the floor space?  I don't think I've ever had a time where I could have gotten away with a half seat.  It's either stuff that requires folding the whole seat or putting stuff on the seat as well as floor.  Of course I also have a roof rack that I can put on when I need to carry something a bit bigger.  Although I don't like putting a bunch of stuff up there.

As for the front seats.  You might want to consider getting the Rubicon's if you don't really need the adjustable of the Baja's.  That will save you half price and give you a stronger seat.  The suspension seats are way ahead of the old spring and foam seats.  If you ever get some time in a suspension seat you'll never want the spring and foam seats again.  Not to mention both of my seats weighed less then one of me non-reclinable stock seats.  I still need/want to get the matching seat cover they sell so my seats match better.
