Slave Cylinder Issue - 87 YJ
« on: July 18, 2008, 05:53:49 PM »
Need some advice before wasting too much money here.  A few weeks ago I swapped in a new rebuilt 2.5 and replace the clutch, pressure plate and slave cylinder.  After driving 100 miles or so, my clutch pedal went dead and fluid spilling out of the bottom of my bell housing.  I found that the bleeder line from the slave cylinder had come loose.  The "U" shaped pin had somehow worked its way out.  So I dropped the tranny and re-inserted the pin thinking it was just a fluke as maybe I didn't have it pushed all the way in the first time.  Lo and Behold, the same thing yesterday, although now I think it is the other line (from the master cylinder) that has come loose.  I bought the raybestos replacement cylinder which seems solid but I checked a few other manufacturers and it looks like the fluid tubes are connected somehow without using those dang "U" shaped pins.  I thought about fashioning some pins of my own that I could bend on the backside to keep them from slipping out or replacing the slave cylinder with one of these other designs.  Any suggestions?  Also, It seems like my clutch is slipping in 1st and 2nd gear when running up to about 4k rpms.  The motor is revving up, but the power isn't being transferred to the wheels.  Should I have done something with those U shaped pins before inserting them?  Like maybe bending them a little for a tighter fit?  I wanted to jump on here and check with the experts before going to rent that damn tranny jack in the morning.

PS.  If anyone is interested I now have a 2.5L boat anchor in my garage ready to be rebuilt if anyone is interested.  My next swap will be of the small block variety.

Thanks

While you're in there, check the clutch disc for contamination (oil,  break fluid)  Those hairpin clips shouldn't work loose- make sure that they are fully seated when you insert them.  The  lines that they hold in place should be firmly bottomed out while the 'pins are inserted.

When I re-did the connections last time, I made sure they were fully inserted.  I just want to make sure that when I drop the tranny this time, it's a permanent fix.  Should I be using a different type of fluid?  I used dOT 3 brake fluid which is what I believe the manual said to use.  But I have seen some other discussion on here about Dot 4 synthetic or regular clutch fluid.  I'm just trying to figure out what in the hell could have made that pin back out twice in a row.  Maybe it's too short?  Too much vibration?

Thx..

I've been using DOT 3/4 for years.
