Down on the starter, there is a solenoid.  There is a big wire (from the battery) and small wire (from the box near the battery) attached to the solenoid.  You'll need a helper (one that looks like the hot models on Quadratec's catalog).

1. Hook up a 12 volt test light from the small wire to ground.
2. Have your helper turn the switch to the start position.
3. If the light turns on immediately, you're getting a signal to the solenoid to engergize the starter motor.
4. If the light does not come on immediately, then you have a problem in the circuit that controls the solenoid.

You should be able to feel/hear the starter relay click when your helper turns the key.

Check your battery and battery connections to make sure everything is clean and tight.

If this doesn't work, drink two beers and post in the morning.  :beers:

Sounds exactly like when my computer went out on my '95 YJ.  Does the check engine light come on right away when you turn the key to run or does it also take a while to light up?  If it has a delay, this also indicates a computer problem.  You could have it checked by a shop or a dealership or get an FSM and verify that the computer is getting the voltages and grounds it needs.  Just be very careful not to hit it with voltage while checking things...I mainly checked the connector with it detached from the computer and there is a diagnostic connector that hangs close to the computer that can be used to check a ground and the voltage supply without disconnecting the computer connector.

I got one from the dealership for about $600 (imported to Mexico, where I live).  You can probably get one from a remanufacturer for about half and they can also be found on eBay for even less.  And yes it solved my problem, but just be sure yours is the same problem.

I picked up a used computer off of e-bay for $100.  The seller was "squareheadlightsonly".  He's a guy in West Virginia who specializes in used YJ parts and good, reputable source of used parts.

There are also a few businesses that will refurbish your computer for about $100.  One that I've seen on e-bay is down in Florida, but I haven't used that service.
