44 tooth speedo gear
« on: August 13, 2008, 01:50:35 PM »
OK, guys, I am regearing to 4.88 next week, and I am now looking for a 44 tooth speedo gear to calibrate the speedometer when I do so (I am running 31" tires, so according to my calculations, this is what I will be needing).  The problem is that neither quadratec nor 4wd carry a 44 tooth speedo gear.  Any suggestions on where to get one?

They sure are proud of their gears.  Dealer only charges $10-12.  According my my chart, he's need a 43T which I don't think they make.  I doubt a 41T would get him back to stock.

The stock one is 41 (which I still have in my garage), but according to my calculations, that should be perfect for when I step up to 33" tires.

I got a 38 in right now, and it is within 1mph acurate; according to my calculations (and it conicides with the charts in quadratec.com, and many other sites like this one or this one), for 4.88 gears (changed from 4.10) I will need 44 teeth.

But at least they have 43 teeth here, so that may be close enough!  (in quadratec and 4wd, they only go up to 41).  So even if I have to go with 43, at least it will be much closer to reality than the 41 I currently have.

I have to check if the dealer has any 43 tooth ones...  If they do, I may go with them.  For 44T, I may have to have it fabricated (I know of a place that does this, but dont know the cost; if its more than $30, I may just go for the 43T and call it good!).

Contact www.tacomaspeedometer.com , they can let you know the largest gear possible.  They are great to deal with, decent prices and quick shipping.

They did not have the 43T one, but they told me to try with the 41T one.  If that is not close enough, I'll get the 43T one from the dealer.

By the way, when the speedo is showing 65mph, the GPS is showing only 55, so I am way off!

Mine is like that now as I have the super short slip yoke eliminator...I will have to buy the electronic module from Superflex?? to fix mine...attaches in-line to the wires from the speedo sensor.

That means it's still spinning too fast with those piddly little tires.  :wall:

The other option is to change the setting in the PCM, which requires a programmer.  Dealer only.

I think the best fix will be to put the 41T gear and 33" BFG M/T's as it is suppossed to have in the first place (but, of course, my wallet is holding me back!)

the dealer cannot adjust for tires over 31"...or maybe 33".  You need to get an aftermarket programmer for $200 if you want to change it yourself.

Well, I put the 41T gear in, and I am still about 5 mph off at 55 mph, so I guess I'll try the 43T next (I'll call the stealership and see if they have any in stock; if not, I guess I'll have to pay up at the site Moz recommended, as it's the only one that seems to carry the 43T gear).

I called them, actually, but they told me that they did not have the 43T in stock.  They told me to try the 41 (I have that one on right now, but I am still about 6~7 mph off at 60mph), and se if that works, but now I'm pretty sure I need the 43T.
