The top end of the link is a tapered stud that goes in the sway bar. unbolt the swaybar lay it on the ground and hit the side of the swaybar where the stud goes through with a bit hammer and it should pop out. You don't really want to drive to much on the road with the swaybar disconnected. you can but you would definitely take it easy with cornering

Depends; if it is a YJ, a lot of people run without them (I DONT!).  On a TJ, you need them.  That is my understanding, and I would check before running a YJ without them with more knowledgeable wheelers before taking my comment as valid...

Now, to get them out, you will need the BFH.  Also heating them up with a torch helps...  Just cool them off with water before you touch them!

to get my stock connects out to put on the new disconnectes i had to take the whole sway bar so i could put it in a vise because everything just bounced.

This is how I got mine free, not sure how the TJ is set up though. Take of the castle nut and use a gear puller. Put some tension on it and heat until it pops. Almost effortless.

Hit the swaybar with a hammer, right next to where the tapered stud goes through the swaybar, and a 90º angle to the stud.  This works great for anything with a tapered stud (tierod ends, balljoints, etc.)
