Prices vary by huge amounts.  You can pay as little as $100/per for just in install or as much as $1600 for everything.  It really depends on what's available where you are.  If you can find a race shop (not import) then they might be your best bet.

Around here $200-250 for labor is the going rate for labor while the axle is in the Jeep.  $125 if you bring the axle to them out of the jeep.  Your gears themself with an istall kit are $200 at best.  So I'd plan on $400-500 per axle.

The mechanic that was recommended to me by the local ORC had a set of 4.88's that he was offering to me installed for $600 (both axles).  Of course, I ended up not taking him up on the offer after he welded the perches off center when he adjusted the angle of the axle for the CV shaft, and when I took the Jeep in to correct this, he forgot to put the lugnuts on the wheel (I got out of that one unscathed, but merely by chance!), so I did not want him anywhere near my gears!

Gears are around $300 a set, right??

I wouldn't cheap out on the install....if not set up properly you could be in for a serious headache (or catastrophic failure) down the road.

I was fortunate that the guys installing my axles happened to open up the rear and noticed that the pattern was not good enough for a daily driver...they corrected it...the front was okay.

I went to a place in Pomona,Ca called Tri-County Gear, a buddy sent me there and I have seen them mentioned in Petersons 4wheel and JP Mag, They specialize in that field and when I walked in I saw about 15 diff hardcore wheeling jeeps from CJ's to JK's  and all of their mentions in mags.

I talked to the owner and he knew everything about regearing and lockers ( he has some bad ass rock crawlers and one is a mighty 2.5 as he called it). So i feel good about having them do the work.

So we came to a price of $2,000 which  will be regearing to 4.88, new bearings and other stuff i cant remember and labor is the same if you add lockers so i will do limited slip front and rear!

So that cost will probably meen i'll just leave the 31x10.50's for a while they are 8 months old and do just a 3" full traction lift.

That's why I recommended going to a race shop.  They do gears all the time and can do it correct as well as fast.  I had my rear done by a guy who raced circle track.  He could have done it in this sleep, which is why I let him have at it.  They change out gears almost every weekend.  All, I had to do was bring the axle to him.  Being able to bring the axles in sans Jeep helps since they don't have to dedicate rack space for the install.  Not to mention it's just easier on the bench.

4x4 shops don't normally do gears nearly as often as a race shop so they won't have as much experience.  They tend to take a lot longer.  They usually want all day and charge you for all that time.

As for parts, it will depend.  I think I paid $408 for my Spicer 4.56's which included both Master Install kits as well as carrier bearings.  I got an extra crush sleeve as well.  If you're looking for 4.88's then your only choice is aftermarket.  Keep in mind that prices for gears goes up exponentially, when you go up in axle size.  Dana 30/35 gears are cheap compared to D44 and D60.  Also keep in mind that some shops, especially 4x4 shops won't want to install gears unless you buy them from them.  They can't warranty the work and won't take the liability if something goes wrong.

$2,000 sounds steep unless your getting some type of lockers!  Like Jeffy mentioned I had just over $400 in gears and install kits, $450 for 2 Aussie lockers and $500 for labor.  Thats only $1350, so where is their extra $650?  Better lockers?

My 4.88 should be here on Friday, USPS priority mail.  they were $228.00 for front and rear ring and pinion.  The driveline shop that is doing the install will run $560.00 for both.  They said that it will take a couple days once they get the Jeep to work it in.  I hope that it makes the difference that everyone says it does.  I will let ya'll know sometime next week when it comes back and I get to drive it.

Don't know what your coming from but 4.88's are what I run and they are MUCH better than stock!  That said I am saving up for a D-44 front so I can go 5.38!!!

Oh, and your prices are about right!
