Cheap winch anchor
« on: August 21, 2008, 09:23:55 PM »
I used 6 chains about 12"s in length, 6 square peices of 1/4 plate that were about 2"x2" with a 1" hole in the center, and a triangle that is 8"x6"x6" with a 1" hole drilled in the corner.
Weld chains to triangle on side that is opposing the corner with the hole. one in each corner and one in the center between the other two.
then weld three of the square 2"x2" peices to the other ends of the chains so they are welded at the corner
make sure that the 2"x2" squares sit at the same plan as the triangle.
then weld a chain on the opposing corner of each of the 2"x2" squares
then weld the other three 2"x2" squares at the end of those chains

make sure that when you cut all the chains you have both ends of each length of chain facing the same way that way when you weld them to the steel all the flat parts will be on the same plan. I did not do this and had to cut everything twice. I notched both ends of the chains so that the flat steel slide into the link and could be welded on both sides.

I bought a set of 6 stacks that were 24"x3/4" off of ebay and ran them through the holes in the 2"x2" squares at an angle into the ground and then hooked my winch to a clevis shakle through the hole in the triangle

This anchor has worked very well at getting me unstuck and to hold my jeep in place when i was pulling out a dodge ram.

I have not tryed it in sand only in mud and dirt.  I don't think it will do very well in sand.

yep when your to far from a tree and by yourself it works pretty well. better then walking a couple miles to find someone to come help.  I do most of my wheeling by myself because I don't really know anyone else around toledo to go with so this comes in handy when my winch isnt broke.

How big is the winch bag it fits in ???

Keep in mind you're pulling on welded chain links, butt-welded at that.

it is just a normal size bag that i got from habor freight.  it had a tree saver strap in it and a shackle and a couple of other thing that i didnt need.  I got it on clearnce for like $15.  I already had a tree save strap and a few shackles and the snatch block.

yeah im pulling on the welds but it still holds up.  my recovery points on my bumper are welded on as well.  I guess if somebody does not know hoe to weld then they could have an experienced welder do the welding for them. my welds are pretty strong so i am not worried about it breaking.  I learned to weld working at a rail car repair shop and have passed a few welding certifacation tests.  as far as breakage I dont think it will break all the chains at once if it did break.

I hope you are running a really heavy cable weight sack in the middle of your winch line.  I'd hate to be anywhere near by if that thing came out of the ground under tension.
