Topic: Stearing box

So my stearing box is leaking. Surprise, surprise. I have alredy put in a bottem seal and bought the top bearing assembly today just worndering if anyone has done this with their jeep and how much "fun" it is/was. Thanks

I attempted this over the summer. Tore everything apart and cleaned it and replaced all the seals.
There are ball bearings that run a ball screw down the center. Getting the balls back in was a bitch.
Also, I spend a bunch of time getting it all back together. It ended up turning on its own to the right
no matter what. I had to really turn it hard to countersteer it to the point where I said F this and bought
a remanufactured one from advanced. I had a repair manual and thought I followed it to a T.
I guess sometimes it is just easier to buy a Remanufactured part than to kill a bunch of time rebuilding.

I'd go reman too.  Getting the drop arm off might be the hardest part, you'll need a BFH.

Might want to consider getting an upgrade while you're at it.  IIRC, the TJ boxes were prone to leaking because they lacked an extra seal.  People have swapped other OEM boxes in it's place which have the better seals.  I'm not sure on the specifics though.

Yes...the Durango box is a very popular swap.  Some say it is even better than some aftermarket boxes.  I bought an AGR and it has worked great in the 4 months I've been using it.

Wow sounds like alot of doom and gloom here. I can't find a reman stearing box here and a new one is $300. I would like to know if a OEM stearing box off somthing else would fit with out to much "FUN."

Thanks! Would this be a bolt on or is some fab work involved to use a diffrent stearing box? Sorry for all the questions just trying to figure the best and quickest way out the jeep is my DD so i can't have it down for to long.

IIRC, there are really only two different Saganaw steering boxes.  One is a 3 bolt the the other is a 4 bolt.  There are a few different steering ratios between them though.  I'd probably go with what everyone else is going with Durango, unless you know what to look for.

Don't know about the '02, but every write-up I've seen recommends a box from a '98 Durango.
