Jeep wont start - error code 42
« on: September 01, 2008, 07:40:02 AM »
So in the midst of moving I drove the Jeep to the new house, > 15 miles, and parked it. There is has sat for a few days (about a week) I go to use it and it starts right up...I drive it about 100 yards and it spits and sputters and dies. Wont start up again, no CEL gas light on, gas level says very low but when i parked it I believe i had a half tank (also estimated from milage). Checked the codes and i get:

12 - power was disconnected from PCM
42 - Autoshutdown Relay short or open

I dont know where to start to get things going again so if you have useful info. please help! thank you in advance.

Other info:
1997 Jeep Wrangler SE (2.5L) - Engine has been replaced
New coil, wires, cap, rotor and plugs within last 3,000 miles

I'd start by pulling out the auto shutdown relay and checking it out.  I believe that the headlight relay is the same, so you may be able to swap that one in and see if it fixes the problem.  The relay is under the hood in the box by the battery.

Need to check the relays.  If you don't have a manual that tells you which is the ASD relay you can get a new one and test it in each location (replacing one at a time) until the Jeep starts.

Or just look at the inside of the lid where they are labeled  ???

LOL, True.  I had to do it the other way because the lid was missing when I bought my YJ.  Had a plastic bag over it for about a year!

UPDATE:

I've added about 3 gallons of gas and checked all of the relays, even switched them around, and its still not starting.

(it does turn over just in case anyone was wondering)

Did you check the power lead into the PCM?

About the PCM code, I always seem to get it (since I got it). no matter the condition of anyhthing else so I am focused on code 42.

Once I figure out which wire i need to check, i'll check it out.

Please keep coming with Ideas, it's not fixed yet...

Re: Jeep wont start - error code 42 - SOLVED

RESOLUTION:
So since a the last modification i made was adding the gas tank skid (which was about a year ago) i thought i'd check its connection and sure enough it was loose. snugged it back up and tried the key and she started right up, and the fuel level indicator is right at half a tank!

So there you have it, problem solved.
