A friend of mine is selling me a Dana 44 out of a scout.  I've got a set of 4:10 gears I can put in it to match my gear ratio of the 30.  What all am I going to have to do to get this swaped under the YJ?

It will work BUT you'll either need adapters or have the flanges drilled for 5 on 4.5".  The nice ting about the Scout is that the axle is off centered a few inches.  This is a good thing since BOTH axle shafts are of the same length.  This mean you only have to carry one spare.  I forget if the drums are 10's or 11's.  Not really a big deal but you'll want to rebuild them.  The easiest part is welding shock mounts and spring perches.

Might want to truss it while it's out.  Downside to scout D44's is the relatively thin tubes they used.  I bent both front and rears into smily faces when I ran them on my flatfender.

One more thought.  make sure it's out of a Scout 2 and not a scout 800.  The 800 has flanged shafts like a willys D41/D44

Hes not sure what year scout they came out of. They kinda have been passed down in our little Jeep group.  The guy that bought it in the first place was going to put it in his daughters CJ well he sold the axle to this guy which was gonna put it in a YJ with a blown motor and of course replace the motor.  Well ran out of money and now its sitting in his garage.  Sounds like from spring perch to spring perch its pretty close to a stock YJ or something like that.

Chances are you'll want to cut the spring perches off anyway and weld on new ones to set pinion angle.  Then the spring spacing will be correct for the YJ.
