Topic: New clutch and hard starting

Hello all, this is a great site and I've been reading topics for days, and am the proud new owner of a 1991 Wrangler YJ with the 2.5. 
My question is how many hours do you suspect putting in a new clutch will take, and where can I find parts for the new clutch?
Also when starting my jeep I have to crank it for about 10-20 seconds and pump the gas a little to get it started.  I already replaced the plugs, cap, rotor, and my wires are on order.  Also do you think that my fluid could just be low for my clutch?  Where do I check the fluid at?

You can check the fluid on the drivers side firewall, if its full you may just need to bleed it. Otherwise if it needs replaced you can get it done in about half a day if you got everything you need.  As far as finding one you could get one from Napa, or Quadratec, 4wd.  Have you tried changing your fuel filter yet? It may just be clogged

So you have two problems.  You should not need to touch the accelerator on a EFI engine when starting up.  It should do all the work for you.  How soon are you starting the engine after you put the key in?  It is fast?  When you put the key in and turn the ignition to ON, you should hear the fuel pump prime.  Once it primes the engine should start quickly.  If not then you might have a fuel pump issue.  Try waiting a second then starting.

Second.  You should be able to pick up a new clutch at any auto parts store or you can go to 4wd.com or Qtech or another number of 4x4 stores for parts...

Thanks for the replies guys.  Where is the fuel filter located?  Since this is an EFI, isn't the filter located in the tank with the sending unit?

It's towards the back on the drivers side framerail.  There's a little skid plate that you have to remove to get at it.

Look behind the front of the dr side rear tire on the inside of the frame.

Thanks for the replies guys.  I will check it out when it stops raining as I have to work on it outside.  One more question, my clutch just went out one moring and there was no fluid beneth it, it just decided to stop working.  Do you think I just need to bleed the system?

I am not sure on the '91, but the '94 (external slave) I replaced the whole system and it came as acomplete unit with no way to bleed it (IIRC).

Did the pedal just swing freely or was there resistance but no clutch?  Usually the master will leak internally while the slave will leak externally.

Mine is a '91 and mine had an internal slave on it, and I think thats what went bad and while I had it apart I went ahead and replaced the clutch while it was all apart

It swings freely.  I put in a new master cylindar and it didnt fix the problem after i bled the clutch.  What do you think my next step is?

The pedal swings freely with a new master?  by swinging freely, I mean you can actually push it with no resistance at all and it will swing like it's connected to nothing.

by master cylindar I mean the part that I started another thread about jeffy.  the one with the pin that i had to pound out.  is that called the master or slave?

The one on the firewall is the Master since you control that one.  The slave is the one the master controls.  Meaning the ones at the clutch.
