Q for you guys running a Teralow 4:1
« on: November 05, 2008, 04:07:54 PM »
Got mine installed (leak free) and am driving the Jeep now.  I hear a whirling sound while driving.  Its not very loud and I think it might just be the low gearing.  Haven't had time to take it on a ride nor have I hit the 1000 mile fluid change.  Everything works just making sure that this is normal for a 4:1.  Thanks, Chris.

In low range the thing is noisy, it eventually quiets fown a bit. Love mine makes the little 4 popper crawls rocks with ease, no more srewing with slipping the clutch just keep it a bit above idle and let her walk over

The noise is normal. Keep in mind that Tera says not to run your RPM's over 3K while in 4low. The planetaries are sreaming at higher RPM's.
If you have not had it in 4low yet it will make alot louder sound when you are. You get all those gear spinning fast and it's gonna make some noise.

Thanks, I figured thats what it was.  Seems like I had heard this was common just couldn't remember.  The first few drives I took I had the top off and couldn't hear anything.  Oh yeah, I tested the LOW on my front steeps (Wife was out, I get in huge trouble for this)  Couldn't beleive how much easier it was!

The 3000 rpm thing is kinda confusing, they do not state in what gear. 3000 rpm in 4 low and 1st gear will have much lower rpms of the planetaries than say 2nd or 3th. On a stock 231 wasn't the max speed to run it in low range like 15 mph max or something like that?

Tera doesn't want the 4:1 to rev over 2500rpms, doesn't leave much room for the 4banger to operate, does it?

I thought the same thing about tranny gear, in low transfer it will be a huge difference whether you're in 1st or 2nd at the tranny.

When I was running a 231 I would keep the RPM's as low as I could. The higher up in gears I went in the tranny, the Scream for the planetaries got louder and louder at lower RPM's.
I.E. in 1st gear they were pretty quite until about 2800-3000 RPM.
2nd gear they started to get loud around 2000-2200.
3rd gear they were getting loud at around 1000-1200.
So If I needed to go faster I would shift gears and keep the RPM's low as I could. Or I would switch to HI range.

In my club in the past few years there have been a number of Tera 231 4 to 1 failures. The welds that hold the sun gear and planetaries together failed. 3 to be exact. 2 where 6 cyl guys and 1 4 cyl. Right now there might be another one going out. Under load it sometimes (getting more and more all the time) it makes a LOUD bang and pops into Neutral. The guy who owns it thinks it's a linkage issue but I think it's something more serious.

My Klune makes alot of noise too, but they don't put a RPM limit on it that I know of.

Yup its a pain top switch between low and high range still, I love the thing for rockcrawling, No monkeying with the clutch just let it put over
