Lube ??

I changed the fluid in my Klune not to long ago. It's 75-90 that's what Klune say's to use. It only holds about half a bottle.I used M1. Anyway when I changed it the fluid was very black and had a strong burnt smell. Not the normal 90wt smell. The Klune is about 2 inches from the Cat. so I know it's getting real hot.
My question is...Does the 90-140 handle the heat better. Do you think it would be safe running a thicker fluid? It doesn't get real cold here in the winter.

Well I called High Impact. They said not to run the thicker oil. There afraid it won't get to the needle bearings.

I did drive it around with some fresh 75-90 Mobil 1 and it seems to be quieter. I 'll just change the oil more often, it's easy enough to do.

How about running a synthetic?

Mobil 1 is a synthetic. I am a huge believer in synthetic's. I have it everywhere possible.

I think the problem was not changing it soon enough. I didn't know that they hold only about a 1/2 quart of oil. I would image that the heat that builds up takes it's toll on that small amount of oil.

In a way its somewhat like a terralow those planetaries work hard. So I am sure that in low range it builts uo quite a bit of heat. The catalytic convertor being near it doesn't help but I doubt its the source of your oil breakdown.
I think with frequent oil changes you are on the right track

Only half a quart?  Really?  If thats the case I'd change it monthly.  M1 is great stuff, how long was it?

Well I should have said half a bottle, I'm not sure what size the bottle is.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. They are only about 6 inches long and are packed with planetary gears and a shift fork. Not much room for fluids.

Not sure on the length of time I would guess maybe 12K-15K miles.

I run Mobil 1 in just about everything, motor, diffs, Klune, Dana 20 T-case. I did run it in the tranny for awhile. It shifted fine but after a few thousand miles I changed it. It was very glittery from the syncro's being eaten. I switched to Redline MT.
