cj7 hard top on a yj
« on: November 23, 2008, 07:20:11 PM »
Ok so im trying to figure out my hardtop / door situation for my 1990yj. currently i have a hardtop with no back window... actually a Lexan window that is cut but needs some tweaking. the problem is i have factory half doors with uppers that wont work with the top. and as most everyone knows doors aren't cheap... so one of my options now includes buying a set of cj7 full doors and possibly a cj7hardtop with glass.. Ive heard that cj7 hardtop and doors can be used on a yj but with some modifications... what are these modifications?

thanks in advance for the help.

CJ hardtop goes on with no mods.  Doors depend on which style latch the doors have.  Early CJ doors use a paddle latch rather than a striker pin.  Late CJ doors are like YJ doors, but heavier.

My buddy runs a CJ7 hard top and cj doors.  The doors are starting to fall apart though because they are so rusty.  heh

Keep in mind that the CJ hardtop does go right on, but if your spare is on the tailgate you won't be able to open the hatch. The hatch closes on top of the tailgate unlike the YJ top.

I have a warn rear bumper with swinging tire carrier so that isn't a problem.

ok time for an update..... got the hardtop on.. it was a little warped and wouldn't contact the body by the door opening but some doublesided foam tape fixed that...  did some bondo work where there was some damage to the top.... And lastly i got a set of canvas uppers to "fix" my door problem... got them off craigslist and I feel like an  :asshat:... basically way overpaid for them.... but i guess its my fault for being dumb.. but anyways after having to cut bend and wield some stock upper door frames to work with the door skins I found that along the bottom of the upper door there is just a rubber seal thing that doesn't seal at all and leaves gaps along the hard door to canvas door upper ... on my uppers for the soft top it has a plastic lib thing that goes into a chancel to keep it closed.. is there something I am missing to get it to seal... ?

I think these are what i have (look the same anyways although doesn't show what i am trying to describe. )

:doggy: finally found and used the mythical modify button.  :roflol:

Double stick tape?  How many bolts did you use to secure the hardtop to the tub?  and did you remove all of the soft top hardware?

The full hard doors have weather stripping all the way around, so I suspect that when using soft doors with a hard top that you need some sort of weather stripping where it meets the hardtop.

I used the 4 holes each side for the top + the 2 latches on the windshield.  the tape stuff is like this but its 1.25inches wide instead of .75.. basically the top when just set on my jeep was about .25 inch from touching by the door. but when bolted down it is now closer to 1/8 or less and the foam tape fills the gap nicely... and yes step 1 was removing all soft top hardware.

the uppers have nice thick weather striping all the way around 3 sides (windshield top and back side), and it seals and interfaces good with the hard top  :thumb:. but the 4th side of the upper aka the bottom aka where the soft upper touches the hard half door, there is only a small round rubber seal of sorts that isn't secured by anything so it has no pressure for sealing. It could be a problem with our modified frames but still makes no since to me compared to how the soft top upper work..

I guess ill have to get some pics to make up for my lack of describing ability.

Ah, I get it now.  Sounds like the corner seals are missing - which is odd, I thought they were on the hardtop.

They look like this:  I'll see if they are laying around anywhere in the shop.

there where seals all the way around the hard top.. but those in the pic don't look familiar. I think the problem is that the hard top isn't seating properly on the windshield so it isn't down far enough.... ill have to get a pic of it.. but basically i think the top should go down another .25 of an inch on the windshield... but it wont go down any further, something is stopping it.
