Drive plate tooth count
« on: December 22, 2008, 08:12:00 AM »
Can someone tell me what the tooth count is on my auto trans drive plate? I'm looking for a hi torque starter. Also, can I use a hi torque starter from a G.M. 60° engine as long as the tooth count is the same? Seems as though the starter mounting bolt pattern is the same.

Couldn't you just count the teeth on the starter you have in the Jeep? Or go to a parts counter and count them there? Maybe take some measurements of length and height of the gear itself? Would it be possible to swap your gear from your stock starter to the one on the hi-torque starter?

The o.e. starter gear is 10 tooth. That I know for sure. The problem is that some 10 tooth aftermarket starters don't work because the diameter of the gear they use is physically larger than o.e. I went through 3 starters from autozone last year before the correct one was found. Everything else was correct except the size of the gear.

What year is your jeep?  This one fits up to 97

According to this page it's actually up to 03
http://www.shopjeepparts.com/mean-green-starter-jeep-wrangler-198703-p-674.html

Those will both work but the price for the mean green is ridiculous. The info I'm looking for in particular is the flywheel/drive plate tooth count for an 02 se. Reason being... I know the 30rh belhousing will match up with the 60° V6 G.M. blocks. I'm wondering if I can get the correct tooth count from the drive plate if I can use a high torque starter (brand other than mean green) from one of the G.M. engines in place of the o.e. starter. Summit has their own high torque starters for considerably less $$$ than a mean green but they have specific tooth counts listed in the product description. Just wondering if their is a starter interchangeability between some of the g.m. starters and the 30rh bell-housing? I know some of the g.m. starters are staggered mount so I'm wondering what, if any will work.

No idea, guess you could always just get a chevy starter from the junkyard and see if it fits before spending the $$$ on a new one.

Out of curiosity, why do you want a high torque starter on a 2.5L anyway?  You can just about start them with a pull rope.

It's more of a curiosity thing right now. I replaced my starter last year. It's still working just fine. However, today it was 5°F outside and it barely turned the engine over. All of the wires are in good shape and the battery is great. But, in cold weather like today it makes me a bit nervous. I rely on the JEEP as a DD and it helps pay the bills around here. Would be nice to know that my starter was definitely going to turn the engine over when I hit the key. Not to mention... that starter in the link above is cheaper then a replacement o.e.

That's not a starter issue.  Install a battery blanket and get a battery with even more CCA's.  The starter doesn't care what temperature it is.

Try to find a nippon denso starter if ar all possible, they are high torque fairly low amp draw and very reliable.
It's the only thing we use on UPS trucks and Most of our big rigs, if we can find Nippo starter for any vehicle we have then that's all we use, beats any other starter made for reliability

I'm running an Optima Red Top. I didn't think I'd have any winter troubles with this battery. I guess anything is possible though. The battery blanket is a good idea. Looking into one now.

Optima should be 700-800 CCA at 0F, which should be enough.  They don't rate them at temperatures lower than that, so it's hard to say how many CCA's you get when it's really cold (-15 here)

I'm picking up a battery blanket today. If it still gives me a problem then I'll replace the reman'd starter with this...

I know it will fit and it's cheaper than the o.e. by $20.00!
