Need help finding fuel pressure regulator for '97 2.5!!!!
« on: January 19, 2009, 08:55:15 PM »
My regulator is leaking, I need a new one.  I've looked everywhere I can find and the part isn't listed for '97's, only '96's and earlier.

Here's what mine looks like:

Just in case I was fooling myself, I DID go out and look inside the door jamb just now -- my Cherokee was built in July 1997.

That regulator is for the older system with a return line on the fuel rail. The 97 and up regulator is part of the fuel pump module and sits on top of the fuel tank. The 97 system has no return line on the fuel rail.

This is what I pull up on Napa's website for the 97 and 98:

The one your showing pops up for the '96, I would just go ahead and order the one for the '96 and be done with it.  This is where I would go with the "if it looks the same, it must be the same part approach" hasnt done me wrong yet... except that time with the brakes on that bus with the nuns and orphans... ???  :wall:

OK, well either way, the part I posted pics of is no doubt sitting mounted on my fuel rail at the motor.  This thing almost stranded me 600 miles from home over the weekend.  It sits only about an inch or so away over the top of the exhaust manifold.  I didn't want to be a 70 mph flameball going down the highway with my kids in the car.

http://www.cskauto.com lists the part for a '97, and so does Autozone, but when I google "OEM Jeep parts" and use those sites it isn't listed.  I even went to a large Jeep dealer in Wichita, KS yesterday and they didn't list it.  They even went as far as telling me that "there is NO fuel pressure regulator", and I even went out and showed them.  They couldn't find it on their microfiche, but I don't think he looked hard enough.

I would just get one for a 96 Cherokee.  All of the 2.5L should use the same regulator.  You may check with Hesco and see what they say, they make an aftermarket one they may be able to tell you if it changed or ask on their website.  I think the tech guy there is named Ben if I remember

Does it have a return (meaning two fuel lines at the rail) fuel line?

If so; strange, you got a 97 with the 96 system. If not; it's a fuel pressure dampener sitting right there, smooths out the fluctuations from injector pulsing.

check for fuel dampener and similar listings, I'm sure you'll find success...

oh, and it's awesome that you have a later year 2.5 XJ, they're super hard to find!

Not really strange since the 1997 TJ came out in mid 1996.  I'd like to see pictures of the engine and a close up of the rail though.

Oh yeah! Forgot about that one... there was no 96 year wrangler (as advertised)...

If he does have a 96 system, yeah he should check for a cherokee of the same year. It was a transition year for them, but no where near as dramatic of a change...

on a side note; jeffy... your avatar is distracting!!!

Well I went to Checker's; they didn't have any problem ordering what I asked them for, and every other parts store that listed it also showed it as a "fuel pressure regulator".  Either way, "regulator", "damper" call it what you want, the way I see it they work off the same basic principle.

Got the fuel pressure regulator in today - WRONG part.  Did some searching around, and the "PRESSURE REGULATOR" from a '95 - '96 2.5L IS the part I need.  Nearly half the price too at $70.  :)
