Topic: Weird sound after lift

About 4 weeks ago I installed a 2.5" kit on my yj. Driving around afterwards, I have a sound that's akin to a stack of chains being dropped on the ground when going over bumps. It's especially noticeable on gravel or on concrete roads when you go over the seams. Could this just be the shocks settling in or something else?

Any vibrations?  Did you install a transfer case drop?

No vibrations. T-case drop, spacers looked about 1" or so, maybe 1.5".

To better describe the sound, it's pretty much identical to the sound made when you drop your bag of tent spikes on the ground when you're pitching a tent.

Bad catalytic converter, heat shield over the muffler, bad tranny mount.  Could be a number of things.

Did you check the exhaust? Maybe it's banging around when hitting a bump. Check the hangers for cracks.

Is the sound coming from the front or rear?

I second the loose heat shield, I had the same problem and it was annoying as hell, except mine made noise even while stopped...

I ripped it off, never gave me any trouble. Since then my exhaust has been redone, but still no problem when the shield was missing. Could be a number of other things though. Maybe even just some spare parts you mighta left behind after the lift?

Well I poked around today and yeah, the mounts that hang the muffler and tailpipe were gone. I got that all rehung but the sound is still there. The sound I had when idle would sometimes dip is now gone though since the tailpipe isn't resting on the rear trac-bar.

I'll look at the heat shield tomorrow.
