You got the right idea. 5w30 would be good.
I usually run 10w 40 in the summer and 10w 30 in the winter. Never has failed me.

You're location would help and what the temp's are like there.

Since I'm in the West Coast and at a lower elevation, I don't really worry about my oil that much.  Only occasionally will it drop below freezing and my Jeep is garaged.  I run Mobil One 5W40, I think.

Man 15w 50 sounds like it would be pretty think.  Do you notice a cahnge in gas mileage or anything with it.

BTW I run Mobil1 10w30 year round.  We have been in the teens so far this winter and usualy around 80 in the summer here in WV

yeah it is thick but it keeps the 2.5L w/ 170K happy.  not difference in gas mileage. it runs much better with the thick oil in spring, summer, and fall this is first winter running this thick and think i need something thinner

After my 91's original 2.5 passed 150k miles I started running Castrol 20w-50 year round to help cut down on blowby. When it passed 200k I started mixing a quart of 80w-90 with the 20w-50. Still ran good when I swapped it out @ 244k miles. But it's blowby was so bad I had to change the airfilter every week, even with a catch can. I've been running 10w-30 in the swapped in 97 2.5.

jeep recommends 10-30 all year, I think.  It should tell you in the manual if you have one.  If nothing else there is always trial and error.  I would run 10-30 and switch to 5-30 with any problems.  My motor started blow by so bad that I ran 10-30 then 20-50 then mack bulldog15-40 diesal blend then finally straight 50 before I tore the motor down.  It was still running beautifully with the exception of it lokking like a fire extinguishers was going off constantly under the jeep going down the road.  I drove about 40miles a day and it burned 4qts a day.  Good thing I worled in a diesal shop at the time with bulk oil tanks that nobody monitored!!  I carried three, gallon washer bottles full of oil behing my rear seat all the time.
