Tip on some cool tire's for the 4banger
« on: February 06, 2009, 11:59:54 PM »
Just wanted to give some of you el-cheepo's like me out there, a tip on some tires that i tried on my 04 Wrangler SE that work really well on a 4banger jeep.

I've had my jeep since June of 06, running on a set of P225/75/15's Wrangler GSA tires, and was ready to be swapped out. I really wanted 31's but did'nt have the extra money, since that size tire runs about $140.00 each.

The 2.4L with the NV1500 5speed and 4.11 gears, gets me around 20+ mpg on the 225 Wrangler GSA tires, and figured the 31's would probly drop me down to 18 or maybe even 15 mpg.  :flush:

So in my gerage i've had a set of (never used) P275/60/15's stored for about a year, but warrent going to fit on my uggly 15X7 ECCO wheel that my jeep came with.

The P275/60/15 is as wide as the 31's, but are the same height as P225 Wrangler GSA's (Just a little squatty though).

So i said what the h#ll, i ordered a set of Black Crager D window steal 15X8 wheels, with a 4.75 BS, and went to town.

So much to my shagrinn, they look pretty darn good on my (Electric Lime Green Pearl) SE. They only stick out about an inch past the stock SE flares, and only really look a bit small if you look at the jeep from the side.

They gave my jeep kind of a stout look, and handle way better than the P225's ever did. I did'nt loose any power, not even on a hill, shoot my little 4banger even seems to run better with them, plus i still get 20+ mpg.  :doggy:

I'll probly run this set up, untill the jeeps paid for, and then slap some 32's on with some 4.88's and a BB. So if your want'in a nice tire that wont suck the life out of your little 4banger bundle of joy, give it a try you might like.  :twofingers:

I need a set of "cool" tires. What brand and model of tire did you install. More details please. Never install or mod anything without photos. It makes the web wheeling experience very unfulfilling.  ;)

Sorry about pics, not sure on how to post them up, but the tires are BF Goodrich P275/R60/15's a 28" tall tire. The same tire that some guys use on there 1/2 ton shortbeds, which is what i was working on untill a bunch off problem set in and had to scrap the project.

I had them mounted on the 76 GMC 1/2 ton shortbed, while it was being put back together, and they looked nice on it, but would probly look stupid on a jeep with a BB.

But i drive my little 4banger bundle of joy 60 miles to work and back 5 days a week, and dont use anymore gas than what i did with the P225's and the P275/60's look better to.

I gues the reason i post this, is because i see a lot of fellow jeepers out there to and frow, every where i go. Because i drive a big truck (18 wheeler) and there running on the little P215 frisbees for what ever reason.

Maybee they can afford to the grand or so, to rip the gears out of the punkins, or loose probly 5 mpg just to run taller tires like me.
