Weld filler for axle housings
« on: February 22, 2009, 12:35:57 PM »
What is the correct rod/wire for welding suspension brackets onto axle housings (e.g., D30, Ford 8.8)?  I know that some use 7018 for welding the tubes to the pumpkins (cast).

I use a 55% nickel rod when welding to the cast.

I always just MIG them.  Dana housings are cast steel, not cast iron - main thing is to get some heat into it.

Normal MIG will work, or a dual shielding MIG is even better, but your best bet is the 7018 rod it has a high tensile strength while still flexible enough for all types of suspension repairs and mod's. It is has been commonly used for frame repairs by most frame shops for years, not to say it is the only rod to use but it works very well in my experiences.

Just make sure if you use 7018 the metal is very clean, oil will cause pitting and weaken the weld, 6010/6011 will burn through dirt and rust
