Distributorless Ignition System?
« on: February 25, 2009, 10:01:00 AM »
Does anyone know if there is a Distributorless ignition system conversion for a TJ with a 2.5L?  I need to replace my distributor so I'm looking for options.

Thanks.

Like a PTO?  You could try retrofitting a lawnmower engine I suppose...

He means a coil on plug setup like the newer 4.0L engines.

You might be able to mod 4.0 parts, but what's the purpose?

not necessarily a coil on plug design.... the purpose would be longevity and reliability.  I go through caps and rotors like water.  A dis system has fewer moving parts and more precise timing control.  My Subaru has dis, my old '87 Bonneville had dis, a lot of vehicles have dis.  I just wish my jeep did.

Are you sure its not your pickup in the cap? I had that happen to my 91.

The Pickup Coil housing is cracked and the bearing for the distributor is shot.  One probably lead to the other.  It would probably explain why my idle is occasionally erratic and once in a great while it back fires going between 2nd and 3rd.  When I told my buddy, Butch (also my mechanic) about the rare occurance of backfires, he look at me like I had been beaten with a Dumb Stick.  "It should NEVER backfire!"  I told him it may have only done it 5 times in the past year and only between 2nd and 3rd.  He repeated himself.  "Ok, I believe you." I said.  He popped off the cap and to my amazement the distributor was practically falling apart.

So remember, regardless that it's a stick..... "It should NEVER backfire!"

I am seeing if you ever found a solution to putting a DIS system on your TJ. I also have a 2.5L TJ, 5-speed and would like to convert it over to a DIS system.

I just wish there was some sort of coil-less, distributer-less, cable-less system for MY Jeep...  I still have something going on in my HEEP that keeps messing my coils, and makes the Jeep lose power.  My oil-change procedure now includes a coil/rotor/cap/wire change, basically, to keep on top of it (well, not that often, but you get the idea), and I always carry an extra coil, cap and rotor in the Jeep for "emergencies" (which tend to happen more often than I would like; last one was about a year ago, but then again, I dont use the Jeep as often either!)

it can be done but i don't see the benefit not to mention almost zero return on investment (ok, for the next 10 years you won't have to buy 3 or 4 caps and rotors but that's almost nothing as far as cost goes). You'd need a custom tone ring on the harmonic balancer in front (the easy part, any machine shop can do it) and an aftermarket ignition system (the expensive part of the deal). For the money you'll spend on it you can probably find a 4.0L engine and transmission with harness and ECU which already has that or a wrecked Rubicon and swap the entire drivetrain (comes with 6 ignition coils not to mention 6speed and 4:1 heavy duty t-case, if you're lucky you get D44s with lockers too if they didn't get bent in the process)

Keep in mind, Jeep had some problems when the 4.0L went with the multi-coil pack setup.

MegaJolt and Ford EDIS 4 aught to do the trick.  The EDIS coil and module, and maybe crank sensor could all be junk yard sourced.  You'd need to buy a MegaJolt and trigger wheel, a means to secure the trigger wheel to the crank/harmonic balancer, and a means to mount the sensor for it.  Laptop & serial cable for set-up and tuning.

that's a good find but i have a few issues with it:
 - no warm-up mode
 - no cranking mode (but looks like it is in beta so should be available soon)
 - only 1 external mod input so either intake air temp or engine temp but not both

and i'm not sure how well it works in the end (it is a DIY solution so don't know), I'm too lazy to search the forums.

have you used it before or currently on any vehicle?

I have no first hand experience.  I still possess most of the parts of an engine swap that never/has yet to happen.  I have an LT1 out of a '97 Formula Firebird that was (may) going to find its way into my Jeep.  I have done tons of research on ignition options to replace the LT1's Optispark distributor, hence me knowledge of Megajolt's existence.
