89 wrangler issues
« on: February 25, 2009, 02:48:15 PM »
I purchased a 89 wrangler 2.5 tbi. It drove home fine. I started having problems with the next day. It was stalling out once it would warm up. At first it seemed like cat was shot. I dropped it down and check/hollowed it out. i replaced alot of vacum lines that were rotted. The fuel pump, sock and filter are new. I replaced the tbi as well. I installed a tps sensor as well. I noticed that the distributor wasnt hooked up to anything other than the plug wire that goes to the module on the firewall. O contacted the person i got it from he said the block was a 95 and didnt know alot about it cause he paid somone to do the swap. Where exactly does the plug for the pick go? i noticed the block on the firewall has 3 plugs and only 2 are being used. The reason i think this is my problem everytime u rev the motor the timeing goes way outta spec. any info would be great.

I think you have the distributor from the "95.  The '89 distributor has no low voltage wiring at all, and the ICU does not have anything plugged into the top receptacle.  Find a distributor from an '88 thru '90 and stick it in; should take care of the problem. ( I went out and looked at my '89 to make sure...)

weird that 2 people have this same problem of having the wrong distributor at the same time....  ??? :puzzled: as castr8r said there should be no plugs for the ecu on the distributor.

That stinks. Anyone have a picture of what it should look like? I ordered one from jw jeep and its supose to be the one i need. I got one from a junk yard and it was missing the internals. just need somthing to referance since every place i talk to seems to be incapable of helping.

don't have a picture but there is a diagram of it in the [url/]parts catalog http://jeepgarage.free.fr/OWN/1988-1990parts-catalog.pdf[/url]. adn it gives the factory part number (being a parts catalog) should at least give you an idea of what it should be like.
