Think with your dipstick...Jimmy!
« on: March 29, 2009, 09:26:30 AM »
So I went out yesterday to get some oil. It's been nearly 2 years since it's last change. Only about 3k miles thou. Anyway I noticed that the Catrol Edge was over $7.00 per QT. VS. $4-5 for other brands. They had a 5 QT jug for $32.00. I didn't get the Castrol, I went with the Mobil 1. Doing the Mobil 1 filter too.

I love the Castrol ads but can't imagine why there prices are so much higher than others.

So what oil and filter is everyone using?

$4-$5 per quart?  :uhoh:  My cars get whatever is on sale and usually a Fram grippy filter.  Usually a 1 gallon  bottle of the Oreilly house brand runs about $12.

I've run cars and trucks over 200K miles, 5K between oil changes and never regretted not filling them with the fancy stuff.

Motorcraft IIRC.  I changed up finally since everyoen so against FRAM's.  The only thing I've noticed is that my oil filter seeps a bit and my oil filter socket does not fit the filter like it does with the FRAM's.

I use the Frams because of the grip, is there something bad to be said about them?

Is there anything good to be said about them?  Besides bein' purdy?  Seriously, there have been a lot of Fram filter failures, some resulting in destroyed engines.  Cut one open sometime and take a look.  I used to run them all the time; now run Mobil 1, Purolater, or something made by Wix.  I personnally watched a Fram shoot off a Jeep.  We screwed it back on and put in 3 qts. of oil, and watched it shoot off again!  It was towed home and a different brand filter screwed into place, filled with oil, and it's still running with no problems.  We'd just completed a trail builder for the club ( TRJC.com ), and had spent the day winching and dragging brush off the trail when it let go.

Well, first of all not all filters even in the same brand are the same.  The surface area of the filter changed between sizes.  Even the bypass valves can be different as well.  I've never had any issues with Fram though.  I've probably been using them since '93 in the Jeep.  I did move up from the little PH16 to the PH8's which are better filters for a number of reasons.  Never had one 'shoot off' though.  I suspect they got the wrong filter though.  Early Jeeps (YJ, MJ and XJ's) use metric pitch filters.

I'm not sure if I like the Motorcraft though.  It's a PITA to tighten up since I have to use a strap wrench and I don't want to tighten it too much since it has to come off again some day.  Never had a Fram leak.  Not to mention you can get PH8's for $2-3 on sale pretty often.  They are the most universal size I think.

I also like the K&N filter. PN 2004. They have a 1 inch nut formed on the bottom of the filter to make it easy to remove.
Do you lube the rubber gasket with oil before installing?
If my filter wrench slip while trying to remove the filter I add a cardboard shim, by taking the filter box apart and tapeing to the wrench.

I'm partial to the syns. I am sure that Brand X dino would work fine as long as it meets the specs by the motor mfg. I don't run that many miles a year :'( so spending a bit over $30.00 on a oil change and filter is not that big of a deal.

Fram filters are cheaply made and have less filter surface inside (the folded paper) than many other filters
Currently I tend to by either Purolator, Wix or Bosch filters

How about a link to the thread? I'm not registering on a site just to search.

Bah, a jeep engine would be happy enough with no filter.  These are the same guys who think you have to run Amsoil or some other high dollar lube in everything including your garden tractor.

Been running Fram for the last 23 years and havn't had any issues.  If you are needing a filter wrench to remove a filter that was on for 3-5K miles you are putting it on too tight or need to have your carpel tunnel checked out :)
