transmission cooler hose help
« on: December 22, 2005, 06:57:04 PM »
hello all. I have a slight problem and could use some suggestions. I have a 1999 auto and one of my transmission cooler hoses has a small leak. It is not in the cooler line itself, but in the small rubber hose that attaches the cooler line to the radiator. The dealership told me that the hose does not come seperate from the cooler lines and I would have to buy both. They gave me an estimate of $325+tax. To have it all done. Any one with suggestions? They also told me that the hoses are crimped not clamped. I looked underneath and it appears that one is crimped, but the one that is leaking has a nut to unscrew it off at the end of the rubber hose. THanks for any help.

I'd have to see a picture of the setup.  I'll check out a FSM tomorrow.  If you can, take a picture of it.

same here, I work on them every day and I can't think of what your talking about.  I haven't seen the wranglers leak like that but the rams do all the time and it is just a matter or the stupid pinch clamps the use from factory.  And you can just replace the rubber hose with cut to length hose from the parts store, depending on the connecter you talking about.

well, if you look at the transmission cooling line, right before it attaches to the radiator, there are rubber hoses attached to the metal lines. the rubber hoses then attach to the radiator. Sorry if this doesn't make any sense. if you stand in front of an auto jeep and look at the bottom of the radiator you can see a rubber hoses attached to the back of the radiator that says "transmisson" on it. The one on the right has a very small leak. I'll try to post pics but can't figure out how. sorry, I'm a computer dummy.

Well, this is what I think you're talking about.  The cooler lines from the transmission to the radiator.  I don't know what the lines look like up close so I can't say if you can replace the line rubber part with clamps.

i understand what you are talking about but the fittings on the lines are not familiar to me.  So again like jeffy said we need a picture or if you can wait,  the next one I get in I will try to remember to look and come up with and answer for you.

hey, yeah! it's the transmission cooler line on the left of the picture. The one on the right seems to be unremovable as it is crimped on. I have a leak in the one on the left.it has a nut type adapter? :(  on the end of the rubber hose. Again, Thanks for everyones help. Please let me now if you've got any ideas.

again i'd have to see it close.  the picture jeffy got doesn't actually show the connector up close.  are sure the crimps you are talking about is not just and metal crimp band around the line, cause you c an cut those off and replace them with normal clamps, then is also some with fittings that you have to use fuel line disconnects to remove but still i don't understand this nut connector your talking about.

okay, since I'm a dummy and can't figure out how to post a pic, here is a link that has a pic of what I'm talking about. It is a generic pic I found online, not one of my jeep, but the largest hose near the top of the pic has the same crimped rubber hose I'm talking about.

now i understand!  no you can't replace thos without replacing the entire hose.  For future referance those are pressure fittings.  now you can get the lines from the dealership and do it yourself or you can go to napa and depending on what the one in your  area does they can make you one.  All you have to do is unscrew the fitting on the radiator side with a line wrench, usually a reguler wrench will slip, and replace it then add fluid to top off.  Pretty easy stuff if you have or can borrow the wrenches, but you may be able to use standard wrenches but if it starts to slip don't continue or it round off.  If you follow those lines they should leed back to the passenger side of the tranny about half way up.

Has anyone had any luck finding these hoses outside the dealer?  For my 1997 TJ the dealers quote to special order these is $160 plus tax. The return hose is $77 without the clips.  Can one reroute these to a trans cooler not in the radiator?  Does anyone know what you need to reroute the autotrans to a seperate trans cooler?

I know I have all the things you don't want in a jeep, 4cyl and autotrans but, man this jeep thing is fun  :D .  This one will eventually go to my teenager when he drives - I won't have to worry about speeding tickets.

You do realize the radiator is a transmission cooler.

Yea just wondered if the flow through the bottom of the radiator did enough cooling.

I was happy to find this thread and the picture. That's exactly the hoses I need. Just was wondering if a seperate cooler would do a better job.  Right now the hose has a pretty small leak near the raditaor side just where the pressure fitting is connected (probably some sort of seal).

I actually have the original radiatior in my jeep that is leaking a little on the top.  I am planning on getting the 3 row radiatior and just didn't want to hook the old hose to it.  I wanted to check on options from the experts.

I bought it in the middle of Dec and don't have a lot of experience with it.  It has 73k on it.  I have been reading the boards and found my way over here (thank goodness).

I tried my local NAPA and they laughed at me as well as other parts stores in the Seattle area.  The Dealer said that the part had been superceeded a couple of time and didn't give me the feeling that the new parts would exactly work (took them a long time find a listing of parts and said they need to order them).  I'm not the most talented with a wrench but try to do most of maintence on my vehicles.  Thanks for any help.
