trans or transfercase problem

Hi new to group and jeeps. Just out in the mud when in 4h and shifting gears sometime it wouldn"t go to next gear just grind! Ihad to put it back into 2h then 1st gear . then it would let me go back to 4h. ENY IDEAS?

Need more info. What year, size motor and type of tranny etc...

Thanks for the reply.  It"s a 1997 2.5l wrangler bare bones jeep. I dont know what trans or transfer it is all stock. i still have to get under it to check numbers but the weather has not been to good.

Well with that tranny you have behind that 2.5L it could be a number of problems. Those trannies are known to be light duty weak trannies. I am not sure which version you have in the 97' TJ but it is a variant if no the same tranny I had in my 92' YJ 2.5L. I ended up doing the conversion seen here.

Thanks for the info! I will have to look into doing the swap this spring .
