Just finished regearing

So i have a 93 yj with a summit hi flow cat, but other than that, stock. Just went from the stock 4.10 gears to 4.88.  :pirate:

WOW!! 8)

Probably the most difficult project of my entire life. i had issues shimming the pinion because you actually have to press and unpress the bearings every time :brick:

And, the inner drivers side seal on my dana 30 took two hours to get seated into place  :fitz:

However, just an 11 mile drive really shows how worth it this was. I got to 80 on the interstate! :weee:

Looking forward to tracking my gas mileage, hoping it will go up from 15 with my 33x12.50 muds

Verdict: Best $400 i ever spent

Should be using setup bearings.

Just a warning, it took me 3 days. the setup bearings would have been a good idea. I think you can just grind out your old bearings so they slip onto the pinion without having to be pressed. i got a really good deal from online. i went through Adam's driveshaft. I got both ring and pinions, and both bearing overhaul kits for $400

Always install the big tires before the gearing change.  That way you feel happy after regearing.  I regeared first and then felt a bit disappointed when the 33s went on!

what brand did you get?
didn't install mine yet, got 4.88s both front and rear from Motive gear - it came down to $145 rear, $135 front + bearings, shims and seals, around $430 or so when you add shipping. Your notes are helpful as i think i will order a set of setup bearings since i can't imagine how frustrating can be to depress the bearings a bunch of times, thanks for the tip.

X2!!!  After 4.88 with 31's, 4.88 with 33's feels sluggish!

The gears were optimum gear and the bearing kits were motive gear.

For the pinion bearings, if you can reuse the big shim behind the pinion bearing then you add shims under the bearing race is not all that hard to knock the race out a couple of times

can you put shims between the pinion bearing race and the diff housing on D35? if that's the case that would make it easier, but for whatever reason i thought the shims go on the pinion shaft before the bearing. that would be a relief

I was able to borrow a set of setup bearings. Made things much easier.

It was also nice to have access to a lift.  :twofingers:
