4 in lift
« on: August 18, 2009, 06:58:15 PM »
I'm going to buy a 4 inch lift, i think I'm going with the Rubicon. because this lift does not come with a drop pitman arm whats the likely hood that i wont need one. also they highly recommend a slip yoke eliminator and cv drive shaft. can i get  by with out this if i do the axle shims and transfer case drop    thanks

RE makes good stuff.  You will need the drop pitman arm.  With no SYE and CV DS, you'll want to keep the TC output shaft and pinion shaft parallel.  You can try the TC drop and if you don't get bad vibes then OK, if you do get vibrations, then add the SYE and CV driveshaft.  Most jeeps will need the SYE/CV DS with a 4" lift.

i had 3.5'' total lift at the axle (2.5'' leafs + 1'' shackles) and i managed fine with a t-case drop. When i did that i actually had to take out 1 set of angle shims (i had 2 stacked) as it started to vibrate quite a bit - you might get away with the tcase drop, but make sure to not have the pinion and driveshaft completely in line or it will vibrate (mine was like that) - you want the pinion shaft center to point below the d/s just a bit so when you accelerate and the axle torque pushes the yoke upwards (the housing tends to rotate opposite to the wheels) it comes in line with the shaft or just a hair below, if you go over that's when you get the vibrations. if you use an angle finder you want less angle to the pinion than you have on the d/s just in case my explanation was vague in the other statement (i can't remember what the recommended difference was, but i did find a few writeups online on how to set it up). again, not sure if will work with 4'' but you can try, the slip yoke was out quite a bit on mine but it never came out completely.

Is this a YJ or a TJ?

Its a YJ, cuz you don't use degree shims on a coil spring suspension.

:roflol:, that's hilarious, i didn't know why I was convinced it's a YJ - pretty obvious now

I have the 4" lift from RE, and I am very happy with it.  I did get the CV shaft, and did not use the TC drop kit, but still, a great kit.  In my case, I am not using a dropped pitman arm because I use a telescopic trackbar, which means that you dont use the dropped pitman arm (I think I still got my dropped pitman arm if you are interested; if I do, I'll give it to you for free, just pay shipping).

You may look at a lift that provides a drop kit for the skid plate. Reason, you lift the body and motor and keep the skid plate where it is at instead of dropping it. I've done that with my TJ. I've added a 1.25" body lift and a 1" motor mount lift without dropping the skid plate and use the stock rear ds with the slip yoke and have no new vibes that I could notice. It has been this way for 5+ yrs. By adding a body lift, you will also gain in the space area for larger tires. If you add TJ flares to the whole thing, you could probably get away with 35's on a 3" lift with stock shackles, 1" body lift, motor mount lift and not drop your skid plate. Do get the proper length shocks and properly locate your bump stops for the new travel.
