cobra 75 wsxt and whip antenna
« on: October 23, 2009, 12:23:20 AM »
I'm planning on picking up a cobra 75wsxt cb for concealment purposes and also using a whip antenna for "around the town" use. I've read on other forums that the 102" whip is best for picking up long distance, but at the same time most 4x4 clubs and parks don't allow it because of the "injury factor". I used to push 18 wheelers and got used to talking to people on a daily basis in the truck, and I'd like to have that communication back -- in my jeep. What I'd ultimately like to do is use the cobra both for trail and daily use, but when needed, switch the antenna between the 102" and a firestick for trails.

Will I be able to do so without having to SWR it every time I swap antenna's?

Will the cobra 75 work well with the 102" whip?

I'd prefer info from anyone with actual daily radio experience!

I don't know why you would have to check the swr every time you switch antennas.  If you check it once with each antenna initially, you should be good whenever you change them.  I couldn't readily find it, but there is a quick disconnect for that type of antenna mount.  I want to think Hustler makes it, but I'm not sure.  That would be your easiest bet for changing between the two antennas.

I was actually looking around the net yesterday and saw a fold down attatchment that goes between the antenna and the mount itself. I think I may look into that more and go with a 4' firestick rather than the 3' one or a 102" whip. I think I saw it advertised at walcott.

I would go with a shorter <5' whip rather then a 102".  102" looks but really isn't useful unless you sit on one location for a long time.  Still a good quality short whip should get the same coverage.  I have a K40 4.5' which I really like.  The problem with the firesticks is that they are too stiff and can shatter if hit against anything hard.  Putting a spring on them helps a little but then you have a billy club waving around.  Where ever you decide to mount the antenna, it should just peak over the top of the Jeep so it's not catching on too many things and is tall enough that the signal isn't getting bounced off the body.
