What does this wire go to?
« on: November 05, 2009, 12:41:25 AM »
I have a cut wire (well, 2 wires). It it located right behind the belt tensioner. It is in line with the wire that goes to the O2 sensor. It branches off right behind the belt tensioner and is blue w/yellow stripe and a black wire. Its not that long and I dont see anything missing any wires. What the heck is it to? Any ideas? I have a lot of these wires around the Jeep and they dont go to anything. This thread might expand with more of these questions later. Like one of those water tight fittings (looks like a mini version of the horn wires) just hanging out, dangling from the wire harness under the brake booster. I dont see a water res. for the windshield squirters, so that could be the culprit for that one, but who knows.

for 91-95YJ and maybe others this is my best guess
the one behind the belt tensioner (which on the years above is at the p/s) is most likely the power steering sense (it will increase your rpm when the p/s pressure goes high like when you're at the end of the travel so your engine won't die - mine is broken too).
the one under the brake drum - most likely is for a hardtop rear window washer fluid pump - the ones with a factory hardtop have 2 pumps on the washer fluid res.

Here you can see that someone took out the washer res. So I can see where these ones go, but not the one in the above pictures. Sorry about the bad pictures, it was taken from my phone.

your p/s pump looks different than mine. that is my best guess still (power steering sense) and it is listed in the FSM as dark blue with an orange stripe (and i'm assuming that's what you got there) and it's an 18gauge wire (most common on the mpfi jeep harness). the black wire is a ground wire, the dark blue/orange wire is supposed to go to pin 10 on the PCM connector - you can test it by touching the 2 wires and your rpm should increase by about 200rpm. It should be connected to a switch that is installed on the high pressure hose fitting (the pipe portion between the fitting and the hose), but if my memory serves me well your p/s is different than mine and could have been replaced at some point and maybe you're missing that switch (check the fittings/hoses on the p/s and see if you have a pressure switch on one of them).

I dont have power steering

then you don't need it. I guess that is an idler pulley then that is used as a tensioner instead of the p/s pump.
