How do i make my headlights shut off...
« on: December 13, 2009, 11:55:30 PM »
when I turn off my '95 yj? I turn the lights on in the day sometimes, but since I dont get a buzz or anything I leave them on and then I have to moooch a jump start. And tune my stations in again. damn it.
I did a search but did not find any easy way to wire them to a spot where the key being in the off position would also shut my lights off.
Thoughts?
Also, Merry Christmas all!

it happened to me too quite a few times too - my buzzer used to work but it died for some reason (and can't remember if it was buzzing when the lights were on and the key out of ignition). interested in this as well, so let's hope someone has a quick solution for it.

I got in the habit of pushing the switch to the off position.  Now it is such a habit that I even check it when they have not been turned on.

YJ's do not have light reminders/buzzers.  You can add one though if you really feel the need to.  I usually end up doing a walk-around to make sure all of my lights are off and the doors locked.

My 94 hardtop does, but it triggers off the "dome light" circuit, so if you disconnect the door switch so the dome doesn't stay on when doors are off, no more buzzer.

A timer could be built w/ a simple RC timer circuit and a relay. So if the ignition isn't in 'run' it will turn off after a minute or whatever. When I get some time I can post the wiring of that.

I would be interested in how that works!

Unless something was added, the buzzer you're hearing is for the key.  The driver side door has two leds on the switch one controls the interior lights and the other is the key reminder.  Neither of these are related to the headlights though.

Actually i think you are right (its been a LONG time since I've had the door switches connected) but that key buzzer also jogged my brain into turning off the lights.

that's a good idea, i want to see that too - you plan to use a transistor or mosfet maybe?. i am alsointerested where would you splice in to disconnect the lights? At the switch maybe? or is there a general relay that feeds all the lights (daytime running light relay maybe)?

I would also do this mod if it works properly; it has not happened to me yet, but it is only a matter of time (I HAVE left the lights on, but not long enough for it to drain the battery!)

No mosfets, a simple relay will do the job with much more reliability. It would be easiest to wire under the dash since most if not all of the circuits you'll need to tap into are there.

The only negative is you can't run your headlights, unless the key is in Run. But you could install a bypass switch for that too to disable the circuit. Still haven't had time to review the FSM, maybe this weekend.

i meant for the timer circuit you mentioned since the solenoid on the relay would drain the capacitor fairly quick otherwise (unless you meant something else)
