I just got my 97TJ with D30/35 regeared to 4.88's. I was reading on changing the fluid after 500 miles, but nothing on how to change it.

What's the best way to change the oil?

Also i have to change the speedo gear, so is a 41 tooth speedo what I should use?

I bet you're loving those new gears! 

You can either pull the diff covers and drain them that way, or use a fluid pump and pump it all out. I'd suggest just popping the covers... I have to pump the fluid out of my 9" and it takes ages...

I would suggust pulling the covers off, if the gears are a fresh install, you are gonna want to get the mettalic stuff from the new gears out...

Always drain the diffs by taking the cover off.  This will allow you to get everything, clean up the inner housing and inspect the gears for any strange wear.  All it costs is some RTV Silicone and one extra time.  If it looks really clean then you probably won't have to bother cleaning the inside of the housing.

I usually spray brake cleaner to get any carbon build up on any surfaces if you haven't changed it in a while.

I don't even bother with gaskets anymore and just use RTV.  If you let it set a bit BEFORE bolting it on, you should be fine.  Otherwise, go ahead and use the gasket.  A light smearing of RTV on both sides won't hurt it.

just saying, I heard axle seals not a big fan of cleaners being sprayed near them. If after only 500 miles they are bad enough you have to spray them something is wrong. And I am not just saying that cause I am jealous tho I am. Take diff off check for big shavings and rtv and fill and enjoy you lucky prickmo....haha santa came early yea?

+1 I don't use aggressive solvents in a diff unless I'm replacing bearings. If you do, be sure and pre-lube the carrier and pinion bearings with the bottle before you put the cover on.

BTW, if you have not pulled some long steady grades your diff is still seating in. I changed the fluid in mine at 1500 as well and by then it was actually dirty.
