I need help with 3 separate issues
« on: January 03, 2010, 02:47:28 PM »
These I would like to fix before I leave Panama on Thursday...  And of course, except for my trail tools, all the good tools are in Costa Rica, so if I can do them with basic tools, even better!

1. Oil pressure is going ballistic.  The indicator on the dash is maxed out.  I thought it may have been a clogged oil filter, but did an oil change and nada.  Problem continues.  I drove the Jeep about 600 miles (back and forth), and had no issues, so there IS oil flowing...  I am thinking sending unit died.  Opinions?  Any way to test it with basic tools (dont have a volt meter, but could probably buy one if need be).

2. Brake pedal spring.  When pulling the brake release lever, the brake pedal bounced.  It seems like the spring that puts pressure on it for it to stay in the "up" (not engaged) postition either broke or became disconnected, but I could not find it (or where it should go).  I used a bungee chord to drive back home, but would like to get this one fixed.

3. Is there a way to check the fuel lines on top of the tank without having to drop the tank?  I dont have my Jack here (it's in Costa Rica), but there is some fuel smell coming from the rear of the Jeep.  I am guessing it is a hose collar that was not tightened properly, since I had the fuel pump replaced the day before I shipped the Jeep to Panama (the one I had on died on me on the way to the port) by the same mecahnic who forgot to put the wheel lugs on my wheels when he did the angle correction on the pinion (I know; I should not have taken it to him, but I had a million things to do myself as a result of the moving, and he was the only one willing to take the Jeep in on Firday night, and deliver it fixed by first thing Saturday morning so that I could drive it to the port and not miss the ship), and I already found a filler hose collar that was not tightened (at all!), so a loose collar after the fuel pump would not be a shocker...  Any other ideas where the smell could be coming from?
4. Fuel tank pressurizing.  Now, to be honest, this one has happened since day one for me, but I want to check if it is normal; when I consumeabout half of the tank, and I open the fuel filler cap, the gas tank is actually releasing air pressure.  As far as I understand, there is a breather valve under the left fenderwell, but I dont know...  How about you other YJ owners; does this happen to you as well?

1. Bad sender, been there twice in 12 years.
2. They don't really have one, its held by the rubber boot on the MC.(At least my 94 is...)
3. The YJ is know for the gasket around the sender/pump unit leaking and there was a recall on it.

That's what I thought...

2. They don't really have one, its held by the rubber boot on the MC.(At least my 94 is...)

So what can be wrong if the pedal is not going back up (I mean, it will disengage the brake, but it just hangs there low enough to activate the brake lamp)?

3. The YJ is know for the gasket around the sender/pump unit leaking and there was a recall on it.

I replaced the sending unit about 3 years ago; Had no gas smell until after the fuel pump job about 3 months ago...

Forgot to mention a 4th issue; when I turn my ignition swith to ACC, nothing is coming on (before, I used to get to use the radio and the interior lights).  My guess is the ignition switch is dying on me as well.  What do you guys think?  Something else I should be looking at?

1)Replace the oil pressure sender.

2)Find a replacement spring

3)Before replacing the gas tank O-ring, you might want to check and see if the rubber hose at the fuel filter is leaking.  This is usually the most common place for leaks since the hose is at a 90* angle and that isn't natural for a rubber hose so it tends to fatigue there faster.

4)Pressure in the tank is normal especially if you're running it low.

1. Will have to do this...

2. I guess my question here is WHERE is the spring...

3. It's not the 90 degree bend; already checked there (and found one loose bracelet, but there is still smell)

4. Thanks!

Well, you might want to see if you can get a replacement under the recall from a while back.  Otherwise, you'll either have to fabricate your own or salvage one.  The spring should be easy to see, IIRC.  Have you looked at it?

Whoops, it was my clutch master that used the boot as the spring, Just went out to look :)

If there is a spring its way up under tha dash I can't see it. Wonder if its in the MC?

I'm talking about the emergency brake, not the regular brake; the only spring I see is the one on the lever to release the brake, but that one is working fine.  From what I saw on the FSM, I could not find any springs.  It seems to me that the issue is that the collar on the cable slipped a bit, and now there is not enough tension to pull the pedal all the way up, which causes to hang JUST enough for the light to come one...

so i thought after your initial post but reading the replies were related to your brake pedal - i'll have a look later today and let you know if i see a spring - if i remember correctly there is one, but don't recall where is located. I'll take a pic if i find it.

i just looked, there is no spring on the pedal - it is pulled back by the cable, so something is not pulling back your cables, a cable broke, the lever in one of your drums or the springs in one of your drums - you can look underneath where the 2 cables meet the main cable that goes to the pedal, it is somewhere behind the t-case crossmember and the rear axle, feel the 2 cables that go to the drums by hand and see if one of them is loose and also look at the adjusting nut on the threaded rod at the end of the main cable there and see if maybe it's rusted and the nut slipped or even if the hookup brace maybe broke or one of the cables came out.

EDIT: one of the cable sleeve holders could have break as well, either the one at the main cable coming out from the pedal, the one on the frame for the rear cables or even at the drums where they get secured in the backplate - have a look, should be fairly easy to identify where the problem is.
It can also be that it needs adjustment, although from what you describe it happened suddenly so that would lead to think that something broke or came loose.

Felipe would not hurt to check the cable it self they can start sticking in the outer cable and that is what makes it hard for the park brake pedal to release. See if the cable moves freely

Yeah, I was looking at the FSM, and there is defenetly no spring.

There is still pressure on the cable, just not enough to bring it all the way up (but enough to make it disengage, thankfully!).  When I looked at it last night, it looked like maybe the cable retainer came loose and caused the adjustment to go out of whack a bit.  But I used some pliers to try to make it move, and it is stuck tight.  I checked the cable clip at the pedal, and it's fine.  I'll check the others tonight and see what's up there...

I'll use this chart and check all components to be sure everything it working as it should (it seems to me that it is, it just needs to be adjusted).  And you are right, the issue was suden (when releasing the brake), it was not gradual...

Felipe would not hurt to check the cable it self they can start sticking in the outer cable and that is what makes it hard for the park brake pedal to release. See if the cable moves freely

Last night I took the cable out.  It does move freely; it just seems like it needs to be adjusted so that there is more pressure on the brake pedal at the end of the travel.

Thanks!

It's easy to adjust.  It's all under the jeep, in front of the driver side rear tire.
