Just make sure you spend the $20 for an atsg manual and you'll do fine.  You need to be a little creative with the clutch packs, since no home user actually owns the tools that they call out.  Usually a press or some all thread and scrap steel are enough to make your own compressors.

I've done a 904, Th400's, aw4 and C6.  None of them have required tools that couldn't be jury rigged with what was laying around.  (Except for an accurate torque wrench for soing the band adjustments)

how deep does water/mud have to be for me to seriously consider relocating the vents? are we talking anything above the midpoint of the wheel or deeper...maybe less? i certainly dont want to have to go through this again..but im also not sure if any of the wheeling ive done contributed to it.

The vent is inside the bellhousing about 5" above the centerline of the input shaft.  So pretty deep

i asked the tranny shop guy about relocating the vent and he said it cant be done on an auto due to the location of the vent. this is a common mod for manual trans. he said he found mud/sand inside when he opened it up..so apparently ive been in deep enough water.

It's well documented how to relocate the vent on the jeep auto.  I can understand why a tranny shop wouldn't want to do it though.

Yea has to be dropped...did you click on linky I put up for it...Another way is to put a 90 in original vent and drill hole in bellhousing to keep tube from hitting torque converter... If he founf that stuff in trans I would def get rid of stock trans cooler its really small and will block up easily and will cause fluid to burn up

@drunkencityworker: you should do a writeup when you rebuild your spare, i have a manual but would be great info for the guys running autos, could end up in the faq maybe - since according to the info oldjeep provided would cost nowhere near $1,300 to rebuild it (including the TC)

yea sounds like a good idea. I will let you know when I get at that.

sorry onlyway to relocate vent is to drop the trans. It realy isnt that bad. A weekend project at most. unbolt and bolt back up. A tranny jack and a hand for some muscle is all you need.
