You're going about this all wrong!  Do the 20 gal mod., fill up the tank, and the bet your buds a 6 pack that you can go 50 miles in your Jeep without the gas gauge moving!

I ended up buying an 05 LJ with the 4.0 and automatic.  I drove a 2.4 auto and a 4.0 auto back to back.  They 4.0 really works a lot less to get the Jeep moving.  My average mpg for 5000 miles so far is 16.4.

Congrats.  I'm sure it's a better choice.

It's not without issues of it's own.  In 05-06 Jeep switched the part used to drive the oil pump (camshaft position sensor) on the 4.0 engine.  The gear that turns the cps is wearing on many of them much faster than the pre 05 part did and in some cases causing engine failure.  There is no fix other than to swap the part for another part destined to fail.  The part from the earlier models is not compatible.  Sometimes when I think about this I wish I had bought a 2.4 or at least a 2004!

what about replacing both the camshaft and the gear (or the whole distributor) from a pre '05 one?

Yeah, that's part of the multi-pak ignition.

Agree with Got Wood?.  Ours is fine for around town and not bad on the highway.  I expected worse but it's for my daughter and her first car.  Moved up one size to 29" tires, mostly to slow the engine down on the highway.  It's buzzing around 3400 rpm at 70 mph.  Gas mileage is pretty awful and no better than a 6 cyl.
