I,m sure this has been hashed about enough but I cant seem to get anything of any use doing a search.
I,m in the market for a used TJ. Manuel, 1997-2003. There are plenty of 4 bangers around. just curious whats the best stock set up to look for,  gears etc. Would like to run 31" tires. What to look at and what stay away from.
Or forward link to me if this has been answered somewhere else, either this site or from somewhere else.

Best stock one was the Rubicon but that's a 6 cyl 4.0L. Not sure what and if the 4 bangers came with any options as far as suspension - i think the only difference in the years you listed might be the 2.5L vs 2.4L and the 5 speed vs 6 speed manual (not sure when and if the change from 2.5 to 2.4 occurred so i might be wrong, same for the transmission).

Well I'm not sure if everyone else agree's with me but if I could have done it again I would have gotten the 6 cyl. The 2.5L is a good reliable motor, but just under powered. You'll spend more money trying to get more power out of it than it would have costed to get the 6 cyl.

I think 2004 was when the 2.4L w/6 speed came out.

If you get the 6 cyl you can find a D44 rear end in some models which will be a big plus over the D35 that comes with the 2.5L.

I ran 31's on my 97 TJ  for about 2 yrs and it was fine. It comes stock with 4:10 gear ratio. Hills you will have to down shift some.

If this is gonna be your first Jeep you'll love it.
