No reason for CD's in this day and age.  Hell, if you run just an amp and speaker you can hook up your MP3 player of choice directly to the amp.

This is the setup that im running, and so far I like it.  I just have an old 600w 2 channel amp hooked up to my front and rear speakers.  Its loud enough that I can hear it over the exhuast, motor and tires  :weee:

Must have a TJ if he's even able to play a cd without skipping  :wall:

Hah, I have a Sony Drive-S MP3/WMA in my YJ and it only skips when I hit potholes 8)

If the laser mechanism ever does get out of alignment, you can usually fix that with a small phillips-head. Most of them are designed to be serviceable, meaning you can realign the eye by turning some adjustment screws.

If the drive motor ever dies I've always got the AUX jack :twofingers:

Jeffy,

The Kenwood unit I have does have the USB/Aux input, unfortunately I have killed 2 units trying to play a cd.  I may stick with the Kenwood unit again and just not play cd's in it.

My advise:

1. Dont get another Kenwood; get a Sony...
2. Jeffy is right? the dampening mechanisms are designed on the vertical plane of the unit, so by installing them vertically, they basically have no dampening...
3. Switche to USB media, and problem solved!

I'm not a huge fan of Sony.  I'd go Alpine or Pioneer.

I've run pioneer HU's for a long time. Seems every time I try something else, last time was Panasonic, I get burned.

My $.02

Speaking of USB, you guys need to keep in mind that flash devices (i.e. USB thumb drives, iPod Nanos/Shuffles, most portable MP3 players, etc) are also prone to damage from shock. They are less prone than devices with conventional hard drives or optical drives, all of which have moving parts, whereas flash devices have none. But they are still vulnerable.

Over the long term your best bet is probably going to be a marine headunit. Also, never trust anything Crutchfield says; they constantly try to pawn off responsibility on defective items so that they don't have to RMA them.

I guess a lot less vulnerable. My thumb drives have been dropped, stepped on thrown in anger and run through the wash. They seem to take the abuse.

Down with Sony!  :twofingers:

Actually my last head unit was a Sony marine unit and it was ok. But after about a year the face plate started having issues. Sound wasn't what I wanted so it was an excuse to get something else  :pirate:
so I swapped to a JVC unit with iPod/iPhone 2-way interface (controls the devcd off either the deck or the phone/iPod) and Bluetooth. The mic for the Bluetooth isn't terrific but works great for conversations around town but the Bluetooth is awesome for listening to pandora radio on my iPhone  :thumb:
cd's don't seem to skip either. Ever. At least I've never noticed then skipping, even though I rarely use them.

+1 for JVC!

Actually, Malaysia...  Not China.  Some are moving there, though.

well, you catch my drift - same as with TVs a lot of them also share the same components - very few (if any) are actually assembled in Japan.
