Single speed fan should have 2 wires, 2 speed should have 3,
unless it uses ballast resistors to control the speed.

There are 4 wire variations as well.

i have a mk viii and it's single speed although there are 3 wires. on mine there were 2 blacks and 1 blue but a black and the blue are actually the same (shorted internally) - don't ask me what's the logic behind that, i have no idea. there is a resistive load on the vehicle that makes the slow speed and is installed in series on one of the wires.

Single speed fan should have 2 wires, 2 speed should have 3,
unless it uses ballast resistors to control the speed.

by common sense you would think that's the way it should be, not the case with the mk viii

EDIT: just noticed you mentioned the resistors - that's what they use on this one and seems to be the case on the Taurus dual fan as well (some have resistors on the fan shroud)
