Manual trans Vs Auto Trans

Ok..  I have the 2.5L in my YJ jeep with the AX-5 trans.  But I've been thinking about swapping engines.  My friend has a spare I6 out of his 87 Camache.   He has the engine and trans.  But the trans is an auto.  I'm not a fan of an auto trans in anything I drive but there are some situations when I've been out wheelin and I said to my self "damn, wish I had an auto trans so I don't have to work the clutch so hard".  

So I guess my question here is.  What do you guys prefer when your out wheelin.  Do you guys like the manual trans, or the auto trans?  I guess what your into would make a difference.  I.E.  rocks, mud, sand etc..  

Just let me know what you guys think about both sides of the argument.

Couple of points here;

First, regarding MT or AT, that's like asking what the best color is for a Jeep.  It's very biased and depends on taste.  Personally, I like the manual, but others prefer the auto.  Neither one is "better", and both have pros and cons.  Other than that, I doubt the AX-5 will last long behind an I6...  Which is why I6's came with the AX-15.  and IIRC, the input shafts of the two are different anyway, so you need to make modifications to make it fit.

Second, if you are going to do an engine swap to an I6, I would recommend selling the Jeep and buying one with the I6 stock, then transfer all the goodies from the old Jeep to the new one.  You will save time and headaches.  If you are gonna do the engine swap (even if my understanding that the I6 you are getting for free), you may as well go for a V6 or bigger...  It's the same amount of work.  Or get a turbo and install it to the I4, and you'll probably spend less than the engine swap and have more or less the same power (probably a bit less, but less weight as well).

Get the auto if you do rock crawling.  I like shifting gears and having to press the gas and the brake with the same foot but really the autos give you more control and are smoother on rocks.  Just check what is being used in most buggies these days.

+1 standard

auto's may help in rock crawl for the fact it won't stall stopped, but with low gears with the standard works well to. 

my preference is still standard. for your vote count.

The '87 4.0 is the older Renix style so it's quite a bit different than the '91+ 4.0L engine.  The tranny in the MJ & XJ clocks the transfer case lower so you will lose some ground clearance and may have skid fitment issues.

Consider finding a donor Blazer or other 4wd Gm and get the 4.3vortec with the remaining parts you need for the swap.

The tranny in the MJ & XJ clocks the transfer case lower so you will lose some ground clearance and may have skid fitment issues.

It's just the tcase adapter that is clocked 10 degrees lower.  It can easily be redrilled - like the one on my AW4.

Youve probably seen it, but the scenario was the driver killed the engine then the
auto quit giving resistance and with no power breaks she couldn't stop
and wa-hooooooieeeee down they went....

On the other hand you could break a clutch, a axle or driveline and do the same thing....

Driver never heard of Park or an emergency brake?  There's not much you can do to solve people, same thing would have happened if she had a manual and mistakenly shifted it into N

Absolutely agree, that why you have a E-brake and should keep it in working order.


And +1 on that I6, renix motors are not worth swapping in. I don't agree to swap in something bigger than the 4.0L, but make sure you use an HO motor, not the renix.

I think she was screwed as soon as the engine stalled out. I've seen a much
longer video and she is pretty far over the side when things went bad.
It was also a really green driver with a "experienced" passenger helping her...

I have never had any interest in the Lions back even when it was free.
Its just a coin toss, with anything break, or will I drive up and down ?

I remember seeing it on TV; IIRC, they (the driver and passanger) had just gotten married and this was their honeymoon...  Experienced or not, it sucks to have this happen to you!

I think I remember seeing it on there when I was a kid....I thought he drove up and down with no problem and that is what caused her issues...brakes couldn't handle the second trip and gave out.   :confused:

dunno the full story behind it - but if she would've had it in 4 low and 1st even with an auto wouldn't that make the converter engage? not sure how the auto works but i would think since i never stalled an auto while rolling that it might have worked - what do you guys think? (for the ones of you that have auto tranny knowledge).
