What I did last weekend
« on: January 19, 2006, 09:48:28 PM »
I went down to Vancouver WA this weekend to do some work on my Jeep and visit a buddy who has a 4x4 Fab Shop. I headed down on Thursday because we had a lot of work to get done. And of course on the way down I had a few issues; First I missed my turn and went an hour out of my way     Second I got pulled over by a state trooper who flipped a bitch just so he could tell me my Jeep was illegal.     I was like but Sir, I have never been pulled over before     . So I get told that my tires stick out too far, my fender flares are too wide and my front bumper is too narrow. The only good thing about the whole thing was he didn't give me a ticket. Third one is the best!!
I was not paying attension and missed the last gas station for the next 66 miles. Yep I ran out of GAS!!    And that was within 2 miles of the gas stations after going 64 of those 66 miles.

So I did make it to BigRock Off-Road and pull my top and get the inside ready because we are going to install a Poison Spyder trail cage. That went real good but we modified a few things. I had bought the rear spreader bar so that went in first.

Then we used the front two spreader bars in the back instead of in the front.
Then Greg (The owner of BigRocks) worked his magic and we put in new window bars that are capped at the end, a new front bar to make the middle spreader bars level.

We were running out of time so I didn't get any pictures of the finished product. When I pull the cage to paint it I'll snap some more pictures.

Greg also installed a radiator hoop on to my front bumper.

And then I installed my new winch rope I got for Christmas.
While Greg was busy on the cage and front hoop I also installed my 33 Engineering belly up.

I also installed Poison Spyder tube fenders and a Kilby gas tank skid. While I had the tank out I modified it to be a 20 gal tank. And also while the tank was out Greg added some extra attachment points to his rear bumper.

I'll be getting the swingout section in a couple of days. He didn't have one built yet and I asked for a few special things.

If your looking for a front bumper here is his new design with the radiator hoop.

And last but not least I installed a Mean Green daul battery tray and 1 Yellow top battery. I need to move my OBA line before I can install the second battery. When I do I'll be using the WranglerNW dual battery kit.

For the rest of the pictures I took go look here; pictures

Wish I had access to a shop.

Did you weld up the three-piece main hoop?  Looks like it may have been done but didn't see any close ups.  I never quite understood why they went with a multi-piece design.  Any particular reason for having spreaders just in the middle?

A few friends have to grill hoop with the boner bars.  Not really a fan of the boner bar though.

What's up with the laws on tires, flares and bumpers there?

Jeffy,
Yes we welded the center bar together. And there are stock bars on the outer in the rear & replacement bars in the front outer.

I have never liked the the boner bar either. I figure if I needed that feeler out in front of me I need to relearn how to drive. But it is the fad right now.

WA has some pretty crazy laws. Your fender flares can only be 3" wide ( stock) yes I know. And the tires can't stick out. As far as the bumper it was the first time I had heard about that one.

Hope I don't get stationed anywhere there...  Tires stick out 7", new flares will only cover 6"...lol

I thought PA was the only state with the stupid 3 inch fender law and they were trying to change it.

Are you sure about the law on fender flares. The owner of l4j, another less sophisticated forum has Warn 6 inch flares. I know he's in the Seattle area, of course he could just be evil.

I am also from Wash. State and I've been driving on the streets for years...  I'm running 2+" wider axles and Bestop fender flares.  Seems that this combination is illegal too.   So, 'knock on wood', I've been lucky so far.

Now back to that bar work...  Our center bars are multi-piece?  I guess I've never pulled the covers off to see that.  How cheezy is that?

Congratulations on your bar work.  It looks great!  I'll have to look these guys up sometime.

SMC,
I have been driving around western & eastern Washington and this is the FIRST time i have been pulled over in my Jeep. When I bought the thing it had 14X33 Boggers on it so you know the tires stuck out. I think what made him turn around was my shortty bumper.

I am not going to change anything, it was just a shock to get pulled over!!

Cle Elum is just a teeny hill away from the Seattle area.  You're smaller town and here it's a bit more residential.  I'll keep watching my back, and not be surprized if or when it does happen.

I've wheeled at Liberty about 3-4 times, and went to the first (of only two) rock crawling events that they had out there.  It's beautiful on that side of the mountain.

Futher South of you is Rimrock trail.  Every summer I try to make it there and just can't get it done.  Hopefully this year all be involved in a run with the PNWTJ that's in July.
Maybe we'll see you out there.

SMC,
I lived in Snohomish up until Oct 05. Before I went to Iraq I was living in Yakima but working at Ft Lewis so I know all about watching to get pulled over.

I have never done any wheeling in the Liberty area but know the Naches/Shoestring trail pretty good. I did Rimrock this past summer with the PNW Jambo and will be signing up again this year. I started wheeling the Washington trail back when I had a Samurai. Plus I was stationed at Ft Lewis back in 83 and had a new 84 Toyota pickup.

I got pulled over down by Tri-Cities by a stater who was bored and just wanted something to do.
