Tuffy Box and hung the Hi-Lift
« on: April 25, 2010, 06:16:51 PM »
Just sold my OEM bumper and tow hooks on Friday for $40.  Saturday, I came up on a Tuffy Rear Security Box for $40.  I bugged a few a you a while ago about making a lid, which I still have the material to do, but I came up on this deal before I got around to it.  Thanks for your time.

I had the hi-lift laying on the back behind the bench seat chained to the roll bar.  When I threw the box in it started rubbing red paint everywhere.  Read some posts about mounting the hi-lift to the roll bar and grabbed two 2.5" muffler clamps and some bolts from my father-in-law's shed.  Wala, another ghetto build by yours truely.

Some final thoughts, I need to run to the hardware store and get some wing-nuts (his shed was all out) and not sure how long the grade 8 cotter pin is going to hang in there on the base plate of the hi-lift.  If I get one more muffler clamp, I think I can even out the base plate so it so I don't have to worry the cotter pin snapping.

Hope I poked enough of you again for some interesting comments  :stick:

Here's a guide to make the Hi-Lift mount to the rear roll bar.

http://www.jonfund.com/technical/hilift.shtml

It's not the best way to mount it, but diffenently the cheapest...

I have my Hi-Lift setup the same way using muffler clamps.  Hadn't really thought about locking it though -- don't think there's much of a market for Jacks over here.

People in LA County seem to look at it at a distance and think its some kind of garden tool -- as in, "hey, you use that thing to hoe with or something?"  I say, "nah, it's just a jack...I'm the tool that does the hoeing."   :naughty:

Can you post some pics of yours?  I'm going to try to adjust it this weekend so the base isn't strained so much.  You can see hard angle it's at.

I installed mine using fencing hardware which I hit with a rattle can of bedliner (just for looks).  I am quite happy with the results...

Here are some pics:

Nice, thanks for the pic's posted!

I think I might do the fence post bracket too.  Then I don't have to contend with the one bolt dragging across the seat belt.

I have bolted the base of the jack on two bolts of the clamp.
The clamp I used (65mm) is exactly the size of the two holes in the middle of the base plate.
See below:

On the back the bolt of the clamp is going throught the oposite hole in the plate.

Just picked up three fence brace bands 2 3/8", some 5/16"x3" round head bolts, wingnuts, nylon nuts, and washers.  It turned out really strong for just some fence bands.  I would have grabbed 3/8" hardware, but I didn't want to drill the bands for it to fit.

Thanks for the idea of fence bands jfrabat.  I'll post some pictures by Tuesday if not sooner.  Cost only $9 at lowes.

You still need those photos from me, 1995yj?  I snapped a few with my phone a few days ago for you, but I don't know what I did with the cable to upload the photos to my pc.  I was going to give it another go with a different camera if you still needed them (doesn't look like it though)

I always liked those stock wheels, just wish they were wider.  I have a set in storage.

I plan on one day get a set of black steelies, like the Cragar or American Racing 15x10 (or something like them).
