I'd love to see a picture of your Jeep padlocked to a telephone pole....something extremely hilarious about that when I picture it in my mind... :roflol:

This is one of the best parts about living where I do; I'm still close to Charlotte but with none of the car-theft worries of Charlotte living

I used to lived in charlotte for a while-finished up my senior year at south meck in fact-and i really dont think you have to go through that trouble to secure your jeep. i was there not more than a few weeks ago visiting my folks and i left the jeep unlocked and windows zipped down w/o a problem. really doesnt seem like that bad of a city that you would need to iron vault your vehicle to keep it safe. Then again, ive left my jeep unlocked in manhatten while visiting friends and nothing has happened..perhaps im a bit too lax?

thing is robbers are random.. my jeep was parked in the side yard near the road for 2 years with nothing but a soft top.. then 1 Saturday after i put the hard top on and i had the jeep parked in the driveway someone decided they would slash the soft upper door and try to steal the radio (cheapest one money can buy at best buy).. i was only gone for an hour and my brother was home... the slashed door cost me more than the radio they failed to steal.. i haven't locked my doors since.

take valuables out of jeep and leave it unlocked, if you have a radio beef up its mounting abit more than the standard radio and take the faceplate off and you should be good. although i like the huge chain around a telephone pole idea.

Sine, that's pretty serious security locking your rear axle to a phone poll!    You did that in LA County and you'd probably have thieves treating your Jeep like it was some kind of shrine, leaving ripped-off auto parts around it as a show of respect.

Lol, certainly. I don't plan on going down to Charlotte in the Jeep anytime soon because I got my Corolla, but I'll try to get a novelty pic for you guys sometime

Nah, you are partly right. Many places of Charlotte, particularly South and East Charlotte, around Pineville, Matthews, South Park, Independence Blvd., Wendover, etc., are plenty safe. But my brother used to live right off Sugar Creek in North Charlotte, otherwise known as 'the hood.' That's one of those crack neighborhoods where you can get shot if you play the wrong music too loud. Cruising into a neighborhood like that in Jeeps like ours attracts a lot of attention, and not all of it is the good kind. West Charlotte is even worse; the areas around Freedom Drive, for example. I used to be the head technician at a Goodwill computer shop down off Freedom, and there were times when I was walking out at night that I honestly thought I was about to get mugged.

Last I remember back in September or October of last year, I saw an YJ posted on craigslist that someone was pleading if anyone had seen it.  It was in the high desert (southern CA) and there are a lot of car thefts out here.  I know with all the dirt off-roading, someone could eye it for rebuilding there’s and never get caught.  I go out on some trails and routinely see stripped abandoned vehicles.  Not so many honest folk around here.  Wish I was up further north by Mammoth and Yellowstone were there's a lot less crime and smaller communities.  One day... ;)

Stolen Jeep please keep a look out

Hi everyone, Our Jeep was stolen last night, 8-13-09 sometime after 8:30 pm. We are members of the SCRAP4Wheelers Jeep Club in So Cal. We are asking for any help to bring our family toy home.

Description: 1987 Wrangler YJ manual transmission
White body, with black trim
Front Bucket Seats, no back seat.
Built for Rock Crawling

Attached are pictures, no changes have been made to the jeep since.

Location: Lakeview Ave and 10th street in Nuevo, Ca.

They climbed by foot over the fence and drove right back over the fence with the jeep. We are asking if you could post it for your members to see should anyone come across it abandoned in the hills (it could have been a joy ride stealing) or if anyone trying to sell it or the parts from it please call us Robin (951) 453-6643 or Mark (951) 453-6644. There is no license plate because it is not street legal, it is only for off roading / rock climbing. However on the back tailgate there is a license plate frame that says "I'll have mine on the rocks" with a picture of mark climbing rocks with his jeep. Any help would be greatly appreciated, we are so sad

PS A police report has been filed, our fingers are crossed. Thank you for all your help!!

Who in the world is going to steal a YJ?

Somebody locally left a note/number on my windshield last month asking if I was interested in selling mine.  That's the first time somebody has done that since I've had it.  Looking at the note, I was kind of thinking, "Dude/Lady, don't you know this is a YJ?! Where the heck are you from?!"

I wasn't interested in selling, so I never contacted the person.

Of course, if its a vehicle and you can take the top off it, then this time of year is probably prime-time in terms of local buyer interest, regardless of the CJ/Wrangler model.  Nevertheless, I seriously doubt most thieves have a list of cars/trucks they're looking for that has "Jeep YJ" is on it.

Yup, lots of Jeeps, CJ, YJ, TJ, etc...  get stolen in Socal.  I think most end up going across the boarder.  They like anything lifted.

A friend of mine had his YJ stolen in San Diego.

You guys in cali are def unique. I dont think there is anywhere else in this nation where Jeep Wranglers are at a definite risk of outright theft. Im fairly confident i can leave my jeep in the nearest "rough" neighborhood and it will still be there in the AM...jeeps just arent on the thieves' radar.

You're lucky. We're not close to the border here, but off-roading does have a relatively large following around here, and we're only about two hours from Uwharrie. I'm not going to say that off-roader theft is common but I will say that I have heard of at least a few incidents in the past year. One of them was the full vehicle stolen and never recovered, the other two were stripped or had mods stolen off of them right in their parking spots. You have to realize that the thieves can ALWAYS find a buyer for the parts. Off-roading mods are expensive.

Once you get into Northern CA, it's not a problem.  I rarely see anything older then 10 years on the roads.

The other thing is, newer cars are harder to steal.  Also, the OE stereo's are better and integrated into the dash so it's not an easy grab.

Oh and the Mexican Police/Govt has been known to drive vehicles stolen from CA.  They don't even bother changing the plates either.  Once it goes across the boarder it's lost.  Insurance will usually just pay out in that case even if you know where the vehicle is.
